PIONEER GIRL BOOK
MARYANNE CASWELL,YEAR: 1964
About eighty years ago, several thousand families left the cosy towns and villages of Ontario to "take up land" on the prairies. Among them were the Caswells of Palmerston, who departed from Toronto in 1885 with all their worldly goods, to make a home on. the treeless land a few miles from where the city of Saska- toon now stands. MaryaIine Caswell was just four- teen years old when her parents, her little brother, and she left their old home for their new and challenging life. She had promised her grand- mother that she would write often, and she kept her promise. Through- out the year of 1885-1886, the letters came regularly to Palmerston, car- ried on horseback to the nearest set- tlement, then by wagon to the rail- head, where they were put aboard the weekly train to travel the hun- dreds of lonely miles that separated Maryanne from Grandma. Caswell. It is these letters, written with a sput- tering pen in the light of a candle, that are here published. Maryanne wrote well; her letters are worthy of a sensitive adult, though they tell of many events from a very young girl's point of view. Grace Lane, who was herself born Ion the prairies, and who was to a .. great extent responsible for the fact .that Maryanne's letters can now be published in permanent form, has contributed a delightful and informa-l tive Preface. The illustrations add greatly to. the book's elegance and charm. Doug~ las Johnson is a skilled draughtsman and a sensitive artist. He has caught in his drawings something of the loneliness of the prairie, and of the strength and courage of the people. Here is a vivid record of adven- ture, of courage, of sorrow. The sim- plicity , lively detail, and affectionate honesty of these letters re-create the life of our prairie pioneers. with an immediacy not often encountered. PIONEER GIRL is a rare and authen- tic piece 0£ Canadiana; it will be treasured by all readers, young and old, who can be touched by the words of a brave young girl from a world that vanished only yesterday.
