Game Recap: Charley Taylor broke the game open with 74 & 32 Yard TD receptions in the 3rd Q & caught 6 passes in all.
Safety Brig Owens intercepts the Giants QB Kennedy & returns it to the NYG 9 yd line and then once the Redskins moved the ball to the 5 yd line Jurgensen rose up short in the pocket, pumped the ball & threw to A.D. Whitfield on a play they had practiced all wk long. (Goglak's 1st P.A.T. was blocked) --A.D. Whitfield has 3 rushing TD's early in the game.
The Giants' kicker Peter Gogolak misses two FG in the 2nd quarter. Following a Joe Don Looney fumble whereas the NYG recovered at the Washington 33, Hanburger rushes in to hit Kennedy of the Giants to cause a fumble that Brig Owens returns for a DC Stadium Record. Interestingly after the TD Charley Taylor handles the kick off and a personal foul on Washington sets the Giants up for a 61 yard TD drive.
Pat Richter had punts of 73, 51 & a 52 yarder --the last which was put back onto the NYG 11 yard line because of a clipping penalty. On a pass out to the 38 yard line Paul Krause wrestled away an INT for Washington. The throw to Charley Taylor would've been good for a TD but he was interferred with putting the ball on the one yard line for A.D. Whitfield to pound in.
Forty three seconds later Brig Owens has his 2nd INT and returns it 22 yards then a personal foul puts the ball on the nine & Looney sweeps around the end for the TD.
After switching QB's the Giants march 70 yards to score before the half and cut the lead : Wash 34-14.
Taylor kicks off for the 2nd half and return it 38 yards out to the 48. Four plays later Woods the NYG QB throws a 41 yd TD to Joe Morrison. The Redskins return the kick 29 yds and Jurgensen directs a 69 yd drive with the last going to Charley Taylor for a 32 yard TD reception. The Giants have another nice kick return of 29 yards and quickly follow it up with a pass to Jones who goes 50 yards for the score. The Redskins respond with a 26 yd kick off return, then lose two yards before Jurgensen hits Taylor for the 74 yard TD pass. That ended the 3rd Q with Washington leading 48-28.
The Giants punting at their own nine to Ricke Harris who eluded several G-Men took the ball into the end zone for a 52 yard punt return and the TD. Following a Redskins punt and NY moving the ball out to the 49 the NY QB Woods is intercepted by Brig Owens who returns it 60 yds for the TD. The Giants again have a good return moving the ball across mid field to the Washington 47 whereas Kennedy is back in under center and advances down the field for an 18 yd TD pass to Thomas. With the Redskins only having nine men on the field Gogolak's PAT is low and no good anyway. Wash 62-34.
Dick Shiner now comes in for the Redskins at QB and throws an INT to Spider Lockhart & this sets up NY to score from the one yard line. The Giants follow up with an on side kick that is muffed and retry form their 35 yd line and the second attempt is recovered by the Redskins. Bobby Mitchell in the back field takes the hand off and breaks down field as the crowd goes wild on his 45 yd TD run! ( Mitchell had been out of the game previously as he had been injured) The Redskins now have 8 scoring plays over 40 yds with 6 of them at or over 50 yds!
As time is winding down Kennedy throws the ball out of bounds to kill the clock not realizing its 4th down. With seven seconds left the Redskins take over possession and that's when Sam Huff calls for the Field Goal Unit to go onto the field while Jurgensen & Coach McPeak were in a discussion on the side line and Gogolak hadn't kicked a FG yet and Huff wanted to rub it in on the Giant's Coach Allie Sherman for his being traded away from New York.
