Online Auction Description

An historic cook book. Published by the Settlement Cookbook Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

“The way to a man's heart” is the subtitle Mrs. Kander gave her Settlement Cook Book.

It is a vintage collectible, now a well-known classic, re-issued, re-printed and re-invented nearly every year since its first appearance. Editions from the 1940s on seem to be for sale all over the web. I found none for 1925, the date of this edition.

It's now freely available in almost any form anyone could wish. So why would you want this book? If you get a thrill from holding something old, something of historical value that has been cherished by someone before you... then this is for you.

The book was originally written to help European immigrants master food preparation in their new country and had phenomenal success far beyond the target community. In 1925 it was priced at $2.50.

In order to keep up with demand, the Settlement Cook Book Company was organized for the sole purpose of publishing this book. That's all they did – and the proceed, then as now, help support Milwaukee's philanthropic activities.

The noted writer/cook M.F.K.Fisher considered this the best book of its kind. The recipes are uncomplicated, using ingredients readily available and inexpensive. These were never intended to be exciting creations. The recipes are just what the harried housewife needed – good food, tasty and nutritious, quickly and easily prepared.

The ads give you a peek into the kitchen of the time. Electric ranges were touted as “automatic”; paper baking cups were new; shredded wheat was recent enough to be the subject of special recipes; Royal Baking Powder contained no alum and no bitter aftertaste; Horlick's Malted Milk was “The food-drink for all ages” safe enough for infants, and Ball jars were stronger and smoother because they were made on the “Owen's Machine”. (Fascinating stuff, this.)

Hard cover with some type of protective finish. No need for a dust jacket, so they didn't have one.

626 page, including a detailed tabbed index in front and ads at the end – including one in (Gasp!) color (see picture).

Very good condition. Cover shows slight rubbing at the bottom of the spine and the corners.

End paper in front starting to come loose. Pages are clean.

7 3/4” X 5 1/2” and it's almost 1 1/2” thick.
