A classic in the interactive Star Trek universe - this game provides opportunity for you and a friend or two or four or more to be transported to the Trek universe (of Kirk's era), choose sides, allocate resources for you ship (or ships), and test your tech and tactical skills against other players' ships and know-how. The basic game is a relatively uncluttered universe consisting of 7 powers to choose from:
- Federation (YAY! - I'm biased, I know)
- Kzinti (from the Animated Series)
- Orion (those pesky pirates!)
The large, black manual gives a little background on each power, then explains how to 'fly' and operate the various space vessels. You'll likely want to choose a particular fleet to learn game mechanics with, then branch out to get a feel for each of the other fleets' strengths and weaknesses. After the 'flight school' portion, the manual has a variety of scenario engagements that eases you through basic gameplay, allowing you to apply the things you read in the 'flight school' portion.
After you're comfortable with the game mechanics, the manual presents the "Advanced Game Rules" that gives a deeper realism to the action on the board. After reading through the advanced ruleset, you're given several advanced scenarios to, again, put the concepts into practice. All-in-all, the basic game walks you through to a mastery of its play. And then...
Like Lincoln Logs and Legos: The basic set is nice, but more and different pieces make a great thing even better! The Expansions build upon the previous work, e.i., Module #1 adds to and corrects issues in the original boxed edition; Module #2 adds to and corrects issues in both the boxed and 1st expansion; Module #3 adds to... well you get the drift. The additions are powers, ships, weapons, and scenarios as well as strategic campaigns (a string of scenarios). The corrections are re-balances to accommodate the additions, so that tech and advantages / disadvantages do not become so overpowering to render a empire unbeatable OR unviable.
You can keep it simple or rush to the full expanse of the Star Fleet Universe through Expansion Module #3. However you approach the game, the joy really comes in no longer watching episodes someone else wrote, but instead stepping INTO that universe and becoming a participant in the Star Trek universe!
All the game pieces are there as well as all ship schematics and tables for movement and damage allocation. The decades have not aged this classic, interactive, community game. If anything, time reverses as you become part of the grand old Star Trek universe.
