12/13/1971 at the LA Coliseum for the last Monday Night Football game of the season the Redskins defeat the Rams as both teams need the win to assist in the Playoffs. Behind one of Billy Kilmer's Finest Days the Redskins win 38-24 and advance to the Playoffs for the 1st time since 1945 under 1st year Coach George Allen. This is Washington's First Monday Night Football Win ever.
The Rams start by intercepting a Kilmer pass and take it 82 yards for the score, but Kilmer goes on to complete 73% of his passes with a 14 of 19 day with his 1st TD going to Roy Jefferson for 70 yards.
Special Teams & Defense help out tremendously in the Coach Allen way as Jack Pardee steps up for a great tackle to stop Roman Gabriel on a 4th and one at the Washington 18 yard line and Ted Vactor blocks a Rams 22 yard Field Goal attempt.
Following the blocked Field Goal Kilmer drives 62 ayrds with the payoff coming with a 32 yard TD pass to Clifton McNeil.
Special Teams again recovers the fumble on the ensuing kick-off and shortly afterwards Larry Brown takes it in from the one yard line as the Redskins take a 24-10 half time lead.
Mike Bass of the defense intercepts Gabriel to set up a 4 yard TD pass from Kilmer to Roy Jefferson. Than after the Rams pull to within a touchdown and going for the tying score, Gabriel is again intercepted by Speedy Duncan who returns it 46 yards for the score.
3 Defensive Interceptions + a Fumble Recovery + Blocked Field Goal Attempt & 3 TD passes from Kilmer left Coach Allen to say "This is a great, great victory. It's the best win of our lives. Men let's just go on from here" And he opened 9 bottles of champaign for the plane ride home & offered up more at the press conference the following day.
Perhaps one of the most important stubs of Redskin History as the playoff drought had been so long in this city. = In really great condition with no apparent flaws clean front and back with even ushers tear
