The Story of an Amazing Customs Agent!
The Coin Of Contraband
By Garland Roark
Here's the kind of biography which should be written more often: the story of an ordinary man pressed into a series of extraordinary situations. Robert Ludlum's fiction does that, but Ludlum cannot hola candle to the story of Al Scharff.
It begins in 1920 when a tubercular son of a Jewish shopkeeper in Memphis, aged 19, come south for his health. He finds that the hot, dry climate of the Southwest is the perfect antidote to his medical prolem.
The adventures begin when he si coopted into a gang of Mexican revolutonaries. A few years later, he escapes their clutches into Arizona. A few years later, the U.S. government sends him on a secret mission into MExico. Upon his successful return, he is offered a job with U.S. Customs (this reader suspects it was to keep an eye on him to prevent talking about the mission). It is the beginning of a 43-year careerin which he made life miserable for rumrunners and durg smugglers before retiring in 1961.
Hardcover with dust jacketm both battered around the edges. Ther eis no printing or edition info other than the 1964 copyright date. There is a price on the flap, so it is probably NOT a book club edition. Pages are white. Binding opens flat to any page.
