11/4/1978 Ticket stub from Homecoming vs Northwestern where they shined thanks to one of the greatest defenses ever assembled in Boilermaker annals in a 31-0 win. The Boilers became the first Purdue team since 1945 to win five straight games in the same season. 1978 Ranked as one of the Top Ten Purdue Teams of all Time following their greatest Bowl victory and AP Rank #13.
Purdue's "Junk Defense" with its coordinator and secondary coach Leon Burtnett at the controls, was wreaking havoc on opponents. In three games, not one opponent had sustained a drive of more than 50 yards for a score. Nicknamed for its different looks, the scheme was fun for the fans to watch. It became enjoyable to gaze at All-Big Ten defensive end Keena Turner putting pressure on the quarterback on one play and knocking down a ball on pass defense next. Turner wasn't alone. All-Big Ten and Academic All-America middle guard Ken Loushin controlled the line while tackles Marcus "Hungry Jack" Jackson and Calvin Clark were proving to be a force as well. Linebacker Kevin Motts, who remains 30 years later tops on Purdue's all-time tackles list with 520 stops, led the team in tackles and was a relentless competitor. The secondary of Moss, Bill Kay, Wayne Smith, and Rock Supan was so stingy that even one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, Montana, could not surpass the century mark in passing against it. Montana playing for Notre Dame completed just 7 of 11 passes for 95 yards and two interceptions. That in itself was quite an accomplishment for the defense. Following their win over Ohio St they were in 1st place in the Big 10, but lost their bid for the Rose Bowl in a loss to Michigan.
This Northwestern game marked a 4 game stretch (that began with Ohio St) whereas the total points allowed by Purdue was only 23 in all 4 games total -- a Team Record. This was their 1st step towards three straight Bowl bids as they finished 9-2-1 with a Peach Bowl victory over Ga. Tech.
Small stub that is clean on the front but has scrap book residue on the reverse side (note name Bonnie ----- in pen at the bottom and noted H.C. 78. Bottom rough ushers tear has been neatly trimmed.
