11/2/1946 Ticket stub from Baltimore Stadium where Notre Dame won 28-0.
One of the most colorful tickets you will find as it has an action football play on the front! Thicker cardboard stock than most stubs and has a seating diagram on the reverse. Excellent or better condition with only a little surface wrinkle on the far side where it is printed Enter East Gate. Remarkable condition! Note the back shows a little color bleed through of the blue from the front side.
The Irish, coached by Frank Leahy ended the season with 8 wins and 1 tie, winning the National Championship. The 1946 team became the fifth Irish team to win the national title and the second for Leahy. The 1946 is the first team in what is considered to be the Notre Dame Football dynasty, a stretch of games in which Notre Dame went 36-0-2 and won three national championships and two Heisman Trophies from 1946-1949. The 1946 team was cited by Sports Illustrated as the part of the second best sports dynasty (professional or collegiate) of the 20th century and second greatest college football dynasty. The tie was their famous game vs Army at 0-0 played at Yankee Stadium.
This series has a history of longevity and friendship amongst the schools (as Army refused to play against Notre Dame for a number of years) and was strengthened during the difficult times of WWII when ND enrollement dropped considerably and the Navy stepped in to set up on the Campus. Since their first clash on Oct. 15, 1927 in Baltimore, the Irish and Midshipmen have annually met in a variety of the top venues in the East and Midwest.
From 1946-55, Notre Dame defeated Navy all 10 seasons by an average of 22 points. Yet even in the throes of one of its worst seasons, a 1-8 record in 1946, Navy gave one more assist to Notre Dame's football cause one year after WWII. On the final day of the regular season (Nov. 30), Navy took No. 1 Army to the wire before losing 21-18 when time ran out while the Midshipmen were a couple of yards short of the Black Knights' goal line.
That close result prompted the AP poll to move No. 2 Notre Dame -- which had the famous 0-0 tie with Army that season but was also a 28-0 victor against Navy -- to the top spot and the national title.
