Online Auction Description

This tiny lidded basket is tightly woven of native grass from the Cerrado of the Brazilian state of Goias. 20th century – Condition is like new. Never used, although it might hold a couple of walnuts or something like that!

Miniature South American tribal basket:

height with lid approx 3” [rounded both top and bottom]

top opening 2 x 2 1/4”

tightly woven grass - one darker band around the middle for decoration

oval shape with slightly bulging sides, about 10” around the fattest part.

Lid slides up and down on handmade twisted twine [approx 30” long plus enough to attach at each end about half-way down on the inside]

Tag intact for your information. Paper tag stapled to the twine that forms the handle.

Goias is a hard-to-reach state in central Brazil with a population of around 6 million.

The cerrado is mostly savanna with open fields of native grasses, protected by the environmental agency of the State government.

The indigenous people of Brazil are called Xerente (sometimes Sherente)

The native artisans now sell their handicrafts through local community associations which have small shops.
