Pyramid #76 Two Years Before The Mast VG-
Two Years Before The Mast
By Richard Henry Dana
A classic of the first order, first published in 1840. The author
dropped out of Harvard due to physical difficulties which made it
impossible to read or study. It was the end of the last great age of
sailing ships, and Dana shipped out on a brig as a common sailor. This
is the story of his two-year stint, told in diary form.
Mr. Dana returned to Boston in 1836, bronzed and healthy. He
reapplied to Harvard, graduated valedictorian of his class, and went on
to become a lawyer. Perhaps not surprisingly, he became one of the first
to specialize in maritime law.
This edition has been "edited for modern reading," whatever that
means. I hope it just describes a bit less formal language without
bowdlerizing the author's text.
First Pyramid printing, 1953. Cover is ver clean with light edge
wear. Spine has wear at the corners, and a faint crease in the middle.
Pages are browned. Flyleaf page is coming loose from binding, and others
may soon follow. Binding is V-shaped.
