Cook Indian food. 2 vintage cookbooks from Indian chefs in Britain
|Online Auction Description|
Twice as good! Two respected chefs of the 1950s, 1960s show you how to prepare delicious Indian dishes in your own kitchen.
1. Savitri Chowdhary, Indian Cooking, 1st American Edition, 1957, Citadel Press
Savitri Chowdhary moved to Britain about 1932 to join her husband, a medical doctor in an English town. In the 1950s, after the publication of her cook book, she gave talks on Indian cookery and made television appearances.
This book first appeared in Britain around 1954 published by Andre Deutsch
Hard covers protected by a dust jacket that has a tear, about 1â on the top of the spine and shows other scuff marks.
8â x 5â - 192 pages.
The back endpaper has four penciled lines giving the names of Indian spices and their English equivalents. A couple of tea (?) stains in the Tea Time Savouries section and one page had a paperclip attached long enough to leave tiny rust marks. Other than that, the pages are in very good condition for a book over 50 years old!
2. Veerasawmy, Indian Cookery, vintage paperback 1969 ed, reprinted 1973
E. P. Veerasawmy âfamous Indian Cookeryâ is the âonly authoritative Indian Cookery Book in English!â according to the cover blurb.
Granada Publishing, Mayflower Books, Ltd. Originally published by Arco Publications in 1963.
6 3/4â x 4 1/3â Very good condition, with tight, clean pages. A couple of penciled notes in the Glossary of Hindustani, English and Tamil equivalents. The paper has hardly darkened at all over the years and the cover colors are bright.
191 pages with index and glossary
There appears to be some confusion over the author's name. It is sometimes given as âE.P. Veeraswamyâ. I have entered it as it appears on both the front cover and the title page. Also, the back cover states that âMr Veerasawmy was one of the foremost Indian chefs of the century.â
He also had a well-known restaurant in London, in the Regent Street area.
