D-431 Earths Last Fortress/Lost In Space VG
Earth's Last Fortress
By A. E. Van Vogt
It looked like a perfectly innocent storefront, a volunteer enrollment office for young idealists who wanted to help the desperate forces of a young democracy overseas with their civil war. The young girl who sat at the desk inside was attractive, sympathetic, and would see that you got your passage safely.
But it was all a trap. It was indeed a recruiting station, but the war for which its brainwashed, deluded cannon fodder were joining was out of this world --- remote in time, remote in space, and none would ever return alive. As for the girl - she was as much a slave of that monstrous future-world machine as if she were chained to the desk.
Original magazine version was entitled Recruiting Station. Later book editions were re-titled Masters Of Time. This, however, is the first book appearance.
Lost In Space
By George O. Smith
First, a disclaimer: This book has NOTHING to do with either the TV show or the movie of the same name.
Commodore Ted Wilson was appalled to learn that the starship on which his fiancée was travelling had gone missing.
Somewhere in the interstellar vastness, the ship's engines had failed. Lovely Alice found herself stranded in a tiny lifeship with two amorous men. And there was no way to locate a speck of matter in emptiness; nontheless, Wilson mounted a search expedition to survey the lost ship's route.
But none of this meant a hill of beans in our wide wide galaxy. Unbenownst to them all, the most terrible threat of all hovered nearby. Bizarre and powerful aliens were watching the rescue attempts, trying to decide whether humans should be annihilated totally, or simply subjugated to their "superior" culture.
Previously both a magazine serial and an Avalon hardocver, this is the first paperback appearance. I do not believe it has ever been reprinted!
Covers are clean and bright with spots of edge and corner wear. Dpinr hsd ehite spots on both edges. Pages are light tan. Binding is tight and square.
