10/8/1973 at RFK Stadium on MNF the Redskins win 14-7 after Ken Houston makes the single greatest tackle in Redskins History! He stopped Walt Garrison (who during the off season was a bull rider), the Cowboys big fullback, at the 1 foot line on 4th down with 15 seconds remaining in the game.
Craig Morton had driven the Cowboys to the 4 -Yard line as time was winding down. First pass attempt broken up by Dave Robinson. Second down pass too low for Otto Stowe to grab. Pat Fischer broke up the 3rd down pass, again to Stowe in the corner of the End Zone, which brought up the 4th and goal play for Dallas.
28 seconds remained and Ken Houston told Hanburger to change the defensive call that he had made, and it was one of the few times Hanbuger listened, as Houston was called to cover the tight end. The change put Houston in the perfect spot as it allowed him to sit back with his heels on the goal line to pick up the fullback.
Morton sent Garrison out of the backfield, pump faked, igniting the charge by Houston. When the ball was thrown, Houston charged after Garrison who caught the ball at the one yard line but before Garrison could get both feet down Houston wrapped his arms around him yanking Garrison backwards whose right leg reached for the goal line , but his forward momentum was stopped. Garrison then looked around and attempted a lateral, but the rest of the Redskins defense smothered that at the 5 yard line.
Prior to the play the crowd was so quiet, Houston said it was like talking on the phone when he told Hanburger to change the play. It was that all 50,000 + were holding their breath just waiting for it all to unfold. There was still complete silence at the end until everyone finally realized what had just happened and it got louder and louder and louder!
Jurgensen completes 14 of 20 for 140 yards with a TD pass to Charley Taylor, but it was the defense and special teams that stood out in this game.
One blocked punt ; two blocked Field Goal attempts ; One Interception returned for a TD by Brig Owens ; numerous passes knocked down and one fantastic goal line stand!
Almost NMT condition as the white part of the cover shows some aging coloration. A very difficult program to find, and even more difficult to find in Hi-grade.
