Online Auction Description

Extremely rare Columbus Red Birds (minor league BB team for St Louis Cardinals) vs Milwaukee Brewers at Borchert Field in Milwaukee Official Score Card / Program.

Rare find as maybe a few thousand of these were available originally at minor league games in 1937 with very few still available. Harder cardboard style quad fold (opens to 4 pages ) noted with advertising through out --originally noted 1940-41 on the cover then scratched out and 1937 written below that

Sam Baugh listed as starting at short stop. The three jointed pages have had tape nicely adhered to prevent tearing as it appears the front cover had a five inch split that was re-taped

UN-scored , only dates written on the front cover and has a signature in pencil of famous sports caster of Milwaukee, Neil Searles on one of the advertisement pages, great corners, no bends or creases

When Sammy Baugh completed college (1937 TCU) his thought was to play professional baseball. Baugh wasn't convinced football was his best sport at that time. He also thought he might have a longer career in baseball. Baugh had been a star third baseman for TCU, and drew the notice of a few scouts. Roger Hornsby, the famous St. Louis Cardinals baseball Hall-of-Famer, was then a Cardinals scout, and in the spring/ summer of 1937, he signed Baugh to play with the Cardinals. However, Baugh was farmed out to the minor league Columbus Red Birds team after being converted to short stop.

He was then sent even lower down in the minors to Rochester. Baugh still had to play behind Rochester's starting short stop, Marty Marion, who would go on to the majors and became a regular for 11 years. Baugh knew he would never be as good as Marion. 'The other problem was I couldn't hit the curve ball very well' Baugh would later say. 'So I left in August {1937} to play football and after that I stuck with football.' His ultimate confidence in being a football player was not proven until he met with other football players in the College All-Star game of August, 1937. -- Note Enos Slaughter HOF Cardinals player was with the Red Birds in 1936-37 but is not listed in this program as he may've already moved up thru the system.
