Online Auction Description

The war in Pacific and the Japanese conquest of Philippines cut off a sizable portion of the sugar imported to the US. A method had to be worked out to make sure there was adequate supply for the military, for industry and for the average citizen. Sugar was the first food product in the US subject to rationing. This lasted from 1942 until 1947.

Thoughtful guests took their own sugar when dining with friends so the hostess wouldn't have to offer any of her family's sugar ration. In fact, most hosts reminded their guests to bring sugar for themselves.

To make this possible, people got creative. (Remember, little plastic baggies did not yet exist.) The handkerchief hobo-bag tended to shake sugar all over everything when untied. Envelopes were easier because you could spoon out a little at a time. To transport the sweet stuff, just fold an envelope over several times, put on a rubber band and pop it in your pocket or handbag. And, yes, you might have to brush out pesky sugar crystals if you didn't close that envelope carefully.

The Upper Crust carried small silver boxes or crystal jars with sterling silver caps for their sugar.

And, somewhere in between were Sugar Toters like this one, A standard glass pill bottle, pocket size, in a handsome leather case that held enough sugar for several cups of coffee.

When closed, the Sugar Toter is about 3" long and about 5 1/2" around. The leather case is in great shape, the bottle and its cap are ready to use and the gold lettering is still there. The snap fastener is an RAU Klikit, used extensively on US military uniforms of the time (trademarked by U.S. Industries in 1940)

You'll have to add your own sugar!
