Online Auction Description

Set of 5 stainless steel steak knives with handles made from some early plastic, perhaps celluloid or bakelite.

8 1/2" long. Four of the handles have a little cracking which is typical of celluloid. No tarnish. Check images for details.

Metal-workers in Solingen, Germany, were the first to develop a process that made the mass production of high-quality steel blades possible. The area became famous for its military weapons, like the saber blades worn by leading military figures such as Bismark and von Hindenburg. Eventually, the manufacture of superior steel became more general. Solingen steel is still highly regarded.

These handles are almost certainly pre-WWII. The use of celluloid for knife handles ended in the 1940s. There were too many new products that gave good results without various chemical dangers associated with the manufacture of celluloid.

Celluloid was popular because it looked like ivory, a process that won a bronze medal at the 1862 World's Fair and was improved to become wildly popular for making useful/decorative household items, especially in the 1920s-1930s.
