Online Auction Description

Antique souvenir paper fan, May 18, 1939, from the farewell dinner on a Japanese ocean liner. Dinner menu and Oriental design on off-white paper. Very good condition; no tears or smudges. The menu was printed on the fan itself.

7 3/4” bamboo sticks, 1/2” at their widest point. They look as good as new

White silk cord and tassel (length about 8”) fastened through rivet

Back: small logo for “N.Y.K. Line” twin red stripes on white (the official funnel marking for the line from 1929).

Front: Oriental design – left side: sprays of flowers, grasses

Right side: Japanese lady in a blue patterned kimono seated before screens

Center front: full menu for the Aloha Dinner

The name of the ship is given on the fan as “Tatuta Maru”; occasionally reported in press items of the period as “Tatsuta Maru”. The NYK liners were popular with American tourists traveling across the Pacific to land in San Francisco harbor, even that close to the outbreak of World War II. According to news reports at the time, the ship had to remain outside San Francisco harbor for over a week in order to get assurance that the cargo of silk would not be seized. Those tourists must have become really frustrated to be able to see their country, but not able to land!
