Online Auction Description
Ohio enacted its first sales tax in 1935. The rate was 3%, with two-thirds of the money designated for the public school system. Merchants were required to buy these stamps in various denominations from the state and hand them out to consumers as sales tax receipts for purchases made. The merchant would tear or cut off the stamps from a sheet, so the edges where they were attached were often rough. The state discontinued the stamp program in 1962.
The statement on each stamp reads: Always obtain from vendor state of Ohio prepaid sales tax consumerâs receipt on all taxable purchases. Printed by Merrick Lithograph Company. They measure roughly 1.5 inches square. These items are used, with rips, tears and soils. Please view the pictures for condition. Will consider swaps.
