Janna Barnes & Noble The powerful voice behind Avalon's No. 1 song "Can't Live a Day" doesn't belong to Patti LaBelle but to Janna Potter Long, a member of the top-selling CCM group since 1995 and a dead ringer for the soulful diva. Janna marks Long's solo debut, and here she unleashes her amazing voice on a collection of dance, R&B, and Top 40 numbers that show her strength as a vocalist. The opening track (and first single), "Greater Is He," is an infectious piece of dance pop, full of thick bass lines and rich backing vocals effectively seasoned with delightful gospel flourishes. The fun and fanciful "Think About That" delivers a universal message of positive thinking wrapped in an infectious, upbeat melody and hook-driven chorus. The ballads "Somebody Loves You" and "More" are full-blown diva demonstrations, while the huge dance-pop number "Overjoyed" has a production big enough to match Long's robust voice. Indeed, one wonders if Long ever felt constrained by her role as just one of a group -- her solo gusto can approach the overbearing. "More" is effective in its power, but "In Christ Alone," which is meant to be anthemic, borders on the shrill. Still, Janna has a lot to offer its listeners; one hopes this won't be the only solo effort from this hugely blessed singer. Lisa Zhito All Music Guide It's always exciting to see how fans of a popular ensemble will respond to the first solo recording by a key member, but the powerful voice and solid material choice by Janna Long should be enough to convince Avalon's fans she's for real. The group has won both Grammys and Doves (their Christian counterparts), and Mark Hammond and Brown Bannister's productions here reflect the same type of dual approach the group's recordings have -- slick, funky, and hooky anthems and ballads loaded with deep spiritual conviction and passion. Most likely, lighthearted pop confections like the opening track, "Greater Is He," and the rock gospel of "Overjoyed" are more likely to catch on with the group's younger fans, but the real power of this disc comes from the torchy ballads like "Somebody Loves You," "Call," and the classic in the making "In Christ Alone." Lyrically, none of these truly rise above the typical spiritual encouragement of many similar songs, but coming from Long, they sound like fresh communications from God to her to her listener, who may be down at the moment. ~ Jonathan Widran, Rovi
