Series of 128 panoramatic photographs of Most region´s waste land was created for intended book which was never released – this book offers 89 panoramic photographs from this serie. Collection from Most region is at opposite end of spectrum from photographer´s renowned romanticism - portrays surrealistic reality down to finest detail. At time work was made it was impossible to speak openly about devastated landscape of Most region. Title was taken from contemporary interview with Sudek: It´s rather sad landscape.

Czechoslovakian communist party and government strategies of 1950s and 60s emphasised development of heavy industry and energy, dependent almost exclusively on brown coal. Largest deposits of coal are located in North Bohemia These areas were developed exclusively on basis of coal mining at expense of other economic activities, natural environment, existing built environment, social structures and public health. Everything had to make way for coal mining as coal was considered “life blood of industry”. Mining executives and especially communist party functionaries were rewarded for ever increasing quantities of coal mined - craze for coal was in full swing, as villages, one after another, were swallowed up. Not even royal city of Most was spared devastation. 106 municipalities, including 650 !!! year old royal city of Most ( with many Gothic houses ) , hundreds of square kilometres ( miles ) of cultural landscape were destroyed. Landscape was impoverished by its loss of diversity , but on top of this, there are devastated areas, ash sludge, and mining dumps.Poisoned by polluted air, forests in mountains died, Region was in ruins and increased illness was evident not only in physical and mental health of residents. In addition to this, after WWII vast majority of original German population was expelled from land where they had their roots. They were replaced by newcomers from other regions who preyed upon land as property of ousted “enemy” as if it did not deserve protection, but was perceived instead as conquered territory to eradicate. Contributing factors to this perception was combination of communist ideology with tense postwar Czech nationalism and general situation in postwar Europe.
