When Jim Rodney, Sheriff of Cedar Springs, went down before the lightning-fast gn of Reece Porter, the last bulwark against bandits of the country known as "The Devil's Checkerboard" had collapsed.
A mild-mannered blue-eyed stranger named Joe Dent had followed Porter into town, on the trail of a valuable horse. He was too late to catch Porter, who escaped across the river, so he would wait until the outlaw returned. Dent signed on as foreman of a large ranch, but soon realized that he was more like a general defending territory against invasion. And he had no army.
So Dent sent for some of the men from his old outfit - the Texas Rangers!
