Bulgaria 1998 issue, Scott's catalog # 4052-54 CTO, 3 Different Butterflies. These stamps are in great condition, witrhout defects or damage.

Butterflies & Flowers Shown:

60 Lev:
Butterfly:
Limenitis reducta, also called Souther White Admiral or Blauschwarzer Eisvogel is a nice butterfly from Palaearctic ecozone (Europe). The first description was in 1901 by Staudinger. With a wingspan of 5.0 - 6.0 cm the Souther White Admiral is a small member of the family Nymphalidae. The butterfly is dark brown or black with white spots and a white band. Furthermore the Souther White Admiral has a faint blue iridescence.

Flower:
Ligularia sibirica is the type species for the genus Ligularia. It is a 0.3-1.3 m tall perennial herbaceous plant, native to fens and damp grassy meadows in Siberia, Central and Eastern Europe. Once fairly common, it has disappeared from many places in Europe, owing to drainage of wetlands and competition from other plants invading its natural habitats; when growing in shade plants do not flower or set seed very well and seed germination is greatly reduced. This species is sometimes grown in gardens for its large leaves and tall spike like arrangement of yellow daisy like flowers.

180 Lev:
Butterfly:
Vanessa, Cynthia cardui; is a well-known colourful butterfly, known as the Painted Lady, or in North America as the Cosmopolitan. This butterfly has a strange pattern of flying in a sort of screw shape.

Relationship with humans:
Vanessa cardui butterflies are raised in many preschool and elementary classrooms to demonstrate the life cycle of a butterfly. Naturally, this is one reason they are so popular amongst children. They are also often found in science fair projects.

Flower:
Anthemis macrantha: Habitats and populations. Grows in grassy places, meadows, by forest roads. The species forms strongly fragmented populations with low numbers of individuals usually growing singly or in small groups.

Distribution in Bulgaria. Western Frontier Mts (Osogovska Mt. - the valley of river Mlachka), up to 1500 m alt. Reported for Vitosha Region (Vitosha Mt.), Znepole Region (Konyavska Mt.), valley of Struma River, Rila Mts, Sredna Gora Mts (Lozenska Mt.) and the Rhodopi Mts. However, the occurrence in these regions has not been confirmed.

General distribution. Bulgaria and Romania.

200 Lev:
Butterfly:
The Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta) is a well-known colourful butterfly, found in temperate Europe, Asia and North America. The Red Admiral has a 45-50 mm (1.8-2.0 in) wing span. The species is resident only in warmer areas, but migrates north in spring, and sometimes again in autumn.

This medium-sized butterfly is identified by its striking dark brown, red, and black wing pattern. More specifically, the dark wings possess orange bands that cross the fore wings and on the outer edge of the hind wings; white spots on the dorsal fore wings near the front margin; reddish bars on dorsal surface of all four wings. The caterpillar feeds on nettles, and the adult drinks from flowering plants like the Buddleia and overripe fruit.

Flower:
Diosphaera jacquinii). Tufted to small clump-forming from a thick woody stock, the ascending to reclining stems 10-15cm long. Leaves ovate to oblong, crenate to serrate, 2.5-5cm long, somewhat leathery textured. Flowers bluish-lilac, the tube and lobes both about 5mm long, many in dense head-like clusters, late summer. Crete and north-eastern Greece, in rock crevices. T.j. subsp. rumelianum, syn T. rumelianum, Diosphaera rumelianum, has stems to about 30cm in length and thin-textured leaves. Bulgaria, Greece.
