Online Auction Description
Bermuda 1988 issue, Scott's cat. # 545 used, 18¢ multicolored stamp depicting the ship S.S. Madiana. This stamp is without defects, is free of damage, has great margins and a nice light cancel.
This stamp was issued to commemorate the 1903 shipwreck of the Madiana a passenger ship making passage from New York to Bermuda.
NOTE: The Marine Court of inquiry into the case of the British S.S. "MADIANA," which steamship, while on a voyage from New York to Bermuda, was stranded on the reefs of these islands on the morning of the 10th day of February, 1903, and became a total wreck.
The Court is perfectly satisfied that after the ship struck, the master, the officers, and the crew did everything in their power to ensure the safety and welfare of the passengers, and that the boats and other life-saving apparatus were in efficient working order and condition.
It would appear from the evidence adduced that the power of Gibbs Hill Light at the present time is insufficient to fully ensure the safety of vessels approaching Bermuda at night from the northward.
We do not make any order with respect to the suspending or cancelling of any certificates, since Section 4 of the Wreck Inquiry Act, 1880, authorizing the suspending and cancelling of certificates does not apply to this particular inquiry.
