D-453 Games of Neith/Earth Gods Are Coming VG-minus
The Earth Gods Are Coming
By Kenneth Bulmer
Cover by Ed Valigursky
Far in the future of humanity, we are beginning to explore the galaxy, and many many stars have planets with (primitive) humanoid life. So we send a robot "missionary" to each planet, to establish the religion of the Gods From Earth who will be arriving soon. Unfortunately, we are not the only star-travelling race playing that game!
Roy Ingalls, an Earthman accidentally dropped onto a strange world with the robot, finds himself forced to replace the defective missionary. But when an alien robot converts him to the religion of the "evil ones," it's Hell in a Very Small World.
The Games Of Neith
By Margaret St. Clair
Cover by Ed Emshwiller
This one also takes up the theme of religion in the future. An isolated colony world settled by three distinct ethnic stocks has decided that some sort of faith is necessary to keep a human society on an even keel. Not wanting to pick a traditional form of worship, the government of Gwethym decides to create a new one out of whole cloth. The worship is more a social gathering than a religious experience. Until the incident portrayed on the cover so beautifully by Emsh:
One day, their goddess appears at a harbor and walks across the water, enters the city, and presents heself at the Neith temple. She states that she is not the goddess but an extradimensional creature. What is going on on this far-out planet?
Looks better than it is! Wrapper is clean and bright, no creasing, touches of edge and corner wear. Pages are off-white. Binding is broken at page 60 on the Bulmer side; it may have been re-glued.
