D-223 THE 13th IMMORTAL
/THIS FORTRESS WORLD Fair
The Thirteenth Immortal
By Robert Silverberg
"Who was your father?" the mutant asked Dale Kesley. And try as he might, Kesley could not remember; his past was an utter blank. But he knew one thing-the answer to his life's riddle lay in Antarctica, the once frozen continent, now an earthly paradise surrounded by an impenetrable barrier.
But how to get there? The only means of transportation on post-holocaust Earth were the spindly six-legged mutant horses. And it was suicide for Kesley to travel on the American continents. Twelve immortal mutants have divided the world among themselves. The two American dictators had set king-sized rewards for his capture-dead or alive! Somewhere in the two continents, help must be found. What happens when immortal number 13 enters this static world?
This Fortress World
By James E. Gunn
The Galaxy itself had suddenly become too small to hide William Dane. For he had stumbled upon the secret that everypower-mad faction of everyplanet would kill and torture to obtain. So he learned the ways of the hunted-how to melt into shadow, how to don other men's identities like masquerade costumes.
Then, one day, Dane could run no more. He had to face his pursuers, and probably death itself. This Fortress World is a long, complex novel. I've always described this as "what Robert Ludlum might have produced had he written science-fiction." One confused individual in a complex society with many hands, if not every hand, raised against him.
Lots of crinkles and creases in these covers, and edge and corner wear (heavy in spots). Spine is taped at one end, wrinkly, with heavy corner nubbing. Pages are tan. Binding is broken nea rthe junction of the two novels.
