The Anything Tree
By John T. Phillifent
(As John Rackham)
Cover by John Schoenherr
The ship's controls had been set for destruction, and agent Selena Ash realized that someone else knew she was not the idle playgirl she seemed. Whoever had sent her into uncharted space against her will must have known of her mission to trace the path of a long-dead Space Scout and find a miraculous tree. But they could not have known that in her attempt to escape she would stumble upon the fabulous planet they sought.
It was a world like Paradise, perfect in its serenity, until the advent of man aroused its sleeping powers, forces which knew nothing of good or evil.
The Winds Of Darkover
By Marion Zimmer Bradley
Cover by Kelly Freas
Dan Barron, spaceport dispatcher on the planet Darkover, had no real interest in the strange, cold world to which he had been assigned.
Until a series of nighmare hallucinations took away his job, threatened his sanity, and thrust him out among alien races.
Drawn against his will into a conflict between a local warlord and a reigning noble, Barron found himself increasingly exposed to powers that Earthmen called witchcraft. A straightforward adventure story, good people vs bad people with a dash of psi power and matrix technology thrown in. No homosexuals in this one, no free amazons. Just good, solid adventure on a strange planet. It's also the earliest entry (chronologically) from the series to mention the Sharra Matrix, source of many problems in subsequent novels.
Clean, shiny covers with corner wear. Rackham side has a faint diagonal crease at bottom. Pages are tan. Binding is tight and square.
