Description of Plant
Chinese wisteria (Wisteria sinensis) is a deciduous perennial vine typically trained to grow on arbors and pergolas in a home garden, though it can appear in containers or as bonsai plants. This member of the pea family, native to China, grows in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 3 to 9 and can reach between 25 and 40 feet in height. In the spring, wisteria vines produce hanging clusters, called racemes, of fragrant purple flowers that can grow up to 1 foot long.
Collect mature brown seed pods from a Chinese wisteria plant in late summer, once the pods have dried out. Store them indoors until the next spring.
Choose a planting site with full to partial sun and well-drained soil, where individual plants can be spaced 10 to 15 feet apart.
Prepare the wisteria planting site by working peat moss or compost into the soil, to a depth of 18 inches and a diameter of 3 feet, with a rototiller. The added organic material should make up one-third of the soil content.
Set up a support structure for the plant, such as a fence, arbor, trellis or wall. To grow wisteria on a wall, attach rows of wire for the plant to train on.
Open the seed pods in the spring by snipping the ends. Soak the seeds in a bowl of warm water for 24 hours before planting.
Fill peat pots with a soil-free mixture like peat, and plant the seeds shallowly. Cover the top in 1/4 inch of perlite. Keep the mixture moist throughout germination, which can take from one to six months. Seeds can also be planted directly outdoors.
Transplant seedlings outdoors once they have reached between 4 and 6 inches in height. Plant them in holes no deeper than the pots. Once settled outdoors, water each plant thoroughly.
Care for Chinese wisteria plants by watering them once each week with 1 inch of water. Fertilize once each year, until the plants are mature, with a superphosphate fertilizer like 0-20-0, using 3 to 5 pounds for every 100 square feet.
