Item Description
Attention Japanese Art Collectors
MIYAMOTO-SHOKO 970 STERLING
Beautiful Japanese Metalwork
LARGE Bowl
c1912 - WWII ERA Dedication
An impressive size, 2 1/2 lbs (approx) of sterling in this beautiful representative example of Japanese culture and workmanship in a precious metal.
This item is not engraved on the body but was dedicated in Japanese writing and inscribed in April 1938 on the bottom (underside), prior to WWII (Showa period - reign of Hirohito). However, according to the internet, the kind of marking on the bottom pertaining to the items manufacture (the hallmarks) are those seen prior to 1912. Could it have been an older piece that was dedicated and formally presented later in 1938? This is 2 1/2 lbs of 970 sterling, appears to be the Chrysanthumum pattern and was made by Miyamoto, silversmith to the Emperor.
This Large bowl makes a beautiful centerpiece or cabinet display piece ( it is approx 4" deep/high x approx 10.25" dia). Very fine condition. Simple clean Japanese styling makes this bowl very elegant.
Bottom is inscribed in Japanese "Given as a Souvenir for good productivity"; "Received the date of Month & Year 1938 April"; "Ensuiko Seito" or "Salt Water Harbor Candy, Inc."; (I've had two translators); "Miyamoto"; "Kin-Say"; "Silver Pure";
Translated, the bowl's markings say "pure silver" and "made by Miyamoto". . Miyamoto-Shoko is the one of the most famous silversmiths in Japan and their creations are also used by the Emperor of Japan and other European prominent families. Miyamotoâs silver standard for purity is 970/1000. This bowl weighs approx 1120 grams (2.5lbs).
The 3 columns of writing indicate this bowl was presented in April of 1938 to commemorate newly issued stocks at "Ensuiko Seito". Ensuiko Seito is the name of a well known Japanese sugar refinery company which still exists today in Tokyo. However, in 1938, this company was located in Ensuiko, Taiwan which was a colony of Japan at that time prior to WWII. Miyamoto established an enterprise in 1880 in Tokyo and Ginza, Japan. Miyamoto moved to Ginza in 1947. Production of luxury items made of gold and silver was halted in Japan during the period prior to or at least by 1941, according to the internet (this might explain why an "older" bowl might have been dedicated.
