Item Description
This is one of a large collection of antique 19th century (some 18th century) original etchings, photogravures and prints that I am posting today. I am scanning these images using my HP in order to get a jpeg image (as opposed to taking photographs of them). These items would look great matted and framed in an office, library, study or where ever.
This is an original c1885 gravure made by Goupil et Cie, a french art company whose senior partner was Vincent Van Gogh, uncle of artist Vincent Van Gogh. Young Vincent was employed at Goupil et Cie 1870-? and was in charge of photographic sales at the Hague office. Was he there when this print was produced???
SUBJECT: Woman and Rose engraving after F. A. Bridgeman 1885
photogravure by Groupil & Cie (french)
Printed below the picture is "Woman & Rose"
"Photogravure, Groupil & Co"
"D. Appleton & Co. N.Y."
Even in black and white, this picture "speaks volumes" showcasing the artistic genius and skill of the artist, of F. A. Bridgeman. This piece captivates the viewer and after a moment one feels like it is the viewer being studied.
This large antique engraving is 122 yr old, great quality and would be lovely matted and framed. The cream mat has has a slight water stain on the left corner that does not affect the engraved area and could possibly be removed by a conservator. A nice deep plate indentation. I see no foxing.
Sheet size 15 3/4" x 11"
Image size 12" x 9 3/4"
From internet: In 1870, after completing a sketchy array of education, at 16 Van Gogh was employed by his uncle Vincent "Cent" at the Hague gallery, where "Cent" was a senior partner with French art dealers Goupil et Cie.
Later in 1873, Goupil transferred Vincent to London then again to Paris by 1875. Vincent's duties progressed from record keeping and correspondence chores in the back office to dealing, if only in a subordinate way, with clients.
By the time the twenty-year-old van Gogh settled in London, he possessed an exceptional knowledge of European art. Not only had he seen the contem porary paintings in Goupil's stock, but he had also exhaustively versed himself in the Golden Age of northern art by visiting museums in The Hague, Amster dam, and Brussels. Added to this was his sojourn in Paris on his way to
This is a great value for this artwork compared to prints I have seen in art stores. A great collectible.
