History of Gold Khokhloma

Khokhloma painting on wood is a traditional type of Russian decorative work. It is one of the most famous Russian folk art. The art of Khokhloma originated in the 17th century in the Volga-river region. The village Khokhloma is on the banks of the Volga River; the folk art originated there and that is where this specific form of art gets its name. It is surrounded by forests of aspen and birch trees. The handmade crafts come from these trees and are dried for at least 3 years. That is why the products are very light. Khokhloma painting is characterized by painting various combinations of colors - red, black and gold. The painting is done by professional artists and the artists make use of delicate floral patterns, feathery leaves, twigs, cherries and strawberries. The motifs are based on combination of scarlet cinnabar and glittering gold against the black lacquer background.

All patterns are unique and hand-painted, so each painting does not repeat one another.
