Ukiyo-e is "picutres of the floating world", was an art of and for the
lower and middle classes of Japan. Ukiyo-e artist captured the faces
and fashions, the favorite places and pasttimes of contemporary life.
They pushed the art of woodblock printing to its finest limits, using
as many as eight different blocks to create on "full-color" print.

All the works in the engagement calendar are fromo the Worcester Art
Museum's John Chandler Bancroft Collection of Japanese Prints. Mr.
Bancroft was a cultivated artist, businessman, and world traveler. Born
in Northampton, Massachusetts, in 1835, graduated from Harvard College,
studied drawing and landscape painting in Europe. In 1860's he
purchased his first Japanese prints; by his death in 1901, Mr Bancroft
had collected several thousand workds that spanned the entire
development of ukiyo-e printmaking. (quoting from this book).
Every other page in this engagement calendar book has artwork
surrounded/framed by gold. Each page would be suitable for framing.
Approximage meausurements 9 X 6.3/4 inches. The other every other page
is a seven days (Monday through Sunday) calendar. And on this page it
states what the print is entitled, date, explanation.
The example shown on this description is "Ichiryusa Hiroshige" (1797 -
1858) Province of Bingo: the Kannon shibnto Shrine, 1854.
