No-one had ever done a television show like The Julie Andrews Hour before, and no-one has done one since. So much more than just a variety show, Julie poured her heart and soul into this 1972/73 TV show, and the sheer quality of it is as breathtaking today as it was when it was originally conceived and broadcast.
"Stylish," "Classy," "Imaginative" and "Inventive" are just some of the adjectives critics used to describe this lavish musical variety show when it made itâs auspicious television debut on September 13th, 1972. British television impresario Sir Lew Grade had tried for three years to woo box-office superstar Julie Andrews and get her to commit to a weekly television series. When she finally agreed in 1972, "The Julie Andrews Hour" premiered to great critical acclaim and a passionate and loyal audience. The show was produced by Nick Vanoff, well-respected for variety shows such as Hollywood Palace. Nelson Riddle wrote music for the show, and Julie herself wrote the show""s charming theme song âTime Is My Friendâ which she would sing to close each episode. Every week, with the help of popular guest stars, brilliantly staged production numbers and a top rate production team, Julie hosted a delightful and often very diversified variety hour.
Early on, television executives were mystified about the showâs low ratings. Certainly the 10pm time slot was a gamble. âTen O""Clock is too late," producer Nick Vanoff reflected, âJulie""s fans are all asleep!". These sentiments were not lost on ABCâs programming chief Mary Starger and in January the show was moved to an earlier 9pm Saturday night time slot, but the move was simply too late. Without the fall season publicity blitz and the luxury of time, the show was unable to build enough momentum to score a larger audience share.
"Of course I""ll be hurt if the show doesnât make it to a second yearâ Julie commented at the time. âEverybody wants to be accepted and loved, but all you can do is your best. You canât try to please everybody, there""s no way. I""ll feel sorry for all the people who""ve worked so hard on the show, if we haven""t pulled it off, but I""ll be rather glad to be home again.â
After ABC cancelled the show, it went on to sweep the 1973 Emmy Awards, winning in no less than seven categories, more than any other variety show that year. Emmy wins included: Outstanding Variety Musical Series awarded to Julie Andrews and producer Nick Vanoff, Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Variety of Music to Director Bill Davis, and 5 other technical awards: Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction or Scenic Design, Outstanding Lighting Design, Outstanding Costume Design, Outstanding Video Tape Editing and Outstanding Technical Direction and Electronic Camerawork.
