The primary item was part of the collection of Henry J. Hauschild Jr., who billed himself as a “Physiognomist – Bibliopolist – Cognoscente di Eccellentissimo”, and was the very proud owner of the world famous "Nose Gallery” at “The Oldest House” in Victoria, Texas. Henry Senior founded the Hauschild Music Company which was later owned by his 8 children and eventually the four brothers before being closed in 1980; After the Opera House Restaurant failed, the space became the Bible Book Store and later Opera House Antiques; This item was part of the leftover inventory of the Music Store and at one time was on consignment at the Bible Book Store;

"Musicologist and historian, Delmer Rogers, longtime member of the staff of the Department of Music at the University of Texas, is of the opinion that the Hauschild Music Company, founded in Victoria, Texas in 1891, was the second oldest institution to commercially publish sheet music in Texas. (Thos. Goggan of Houston being the first.) Also, his extensive research indicates that Hauschild's was the first in Texas to issues music with Spanish titles. About thirty were published, many by talented writers, and sold in large numbers. In addition, probing seems to prove that Hauschilds was the first to publish the efforts of several of the music-loving Germans of the area. Most interesting, too, is that the spritely composition, the Cowboy Rag offered in 1904 possibly was the purcursor of this genre of popular music." taken from "The Cognoscenti Collections";

HISTORICAL NOTE: ""Temptation" is a popular song, published in 1933, with music written by Nacio Herb Brown & lyrics by Arthur Freed. The song was used in the film Singin' in the Rain (1952) & later in the 1983 musical based on the film, & is prominently featured in Valerio Zurlini's Violent Summer (1959). The song was introduced by Bing Crosby in the 1933 film Going Hollywood. Crosby recorded the song with Lennie Hayton's orchestra on October 22, 1933. He recorded it again with John Scott Trotter's Orchestra on March 3, 1945. The artist best known for recording the song was Perry Como, who recorded it several times: In mid-February, 1945, for a radio program, issued as a V-Disc; On March 27, 1945, issued as: an RCA Victor 78rpm single, catalog number 20-1658-B with flip side "I'll Always Be With You" (Chart position #15 in the US); an RCA Victor 78rpm single, catalog number 20-1919-A with flip side "Goodbye Sue"; an HMV 78rpm single, catalog number BD-1153 with flip side "Surrender"; an RCA Victor 78rpm single, catalog number 20-3298-B and 45rpm single, catalog number 47-2886, with flip side "Prisoner of Love"; On January 7, 1974, for an album, issued as: an RCA stereo 12" LP, catalog number CPL1-0585 & quadraphonic 12" LP, catalog number CPD1-0585; an RCA 45rpm single, catalog number PB-10045-A with flip side "In These Crazy Times" (Chart position #28 on the US Adult Contemporary charts); In 1980 at a live performance July 29-31, issued on an RCA 12" stereo LP album Perry Como Live On Tour (catalog number AQL1-3826). Other versions of the song were recorded by Artie Shaw & his Orchestra on September 7, 1940 & by Mario Lanza in 1952. Andy Williams, Screamin' Jay Hawkins & others also recorded the song. Charlie Parker recorded an instrumental version on the Verve label. Released on her posthumous album in 2003, Wildwood Flower, another version of the song was recorded by June Carter Cash & Johnny Cash. The song was also performed live by the legendary duo in 2002. A parody version, entitled "Tim-tay-shun," was recorded in a country music style by Red Ingle with a vocal by "Cinderella G. Stump" (actually a pseudonym for Jo Stafford) in 1947. An interpretation was also featured in Season One of The Muppet Show, with Miss Piggy, four chickens, four frogs, & two males pigs being led by Kermit the Frog in the Muppet Glee Club, Miss Piggy sang a solo in the 3rd verse until the end, her voice being performed by Richard Hunt instead of Frank Oz, her then-regular performer. This song is currently played by "Ohio's Pride," The University of Akron Marching Band. The Michigan Marching Band has been playing a version of Temptation arranged by Jerry Billik for over 40 years. They also a play a shortened version whenever an opponent is stopped on 3rd down. It is also played during their traditional post game performance followed by Hawaiian War Chant, because according to announcer Carl Grapentine, "you can't have one without the other." The same arrangement is also used by the University of Michigan Athletic Bands, including the Hockey, Women's Volleyball & the Men's and Women's Basketball Bands. The Everly Brothers' version (b/w "Stick With Me Baby", Warner Bros. Records WB5220) released in May 1961 reached #1 in the UK charts. The song "Remember," performed by Josh Grobin and Tanja Tzarovska for the 2004 film Troy, is largely based upon the melody of "Temptation.".";

HISTORICAL NOTE: "Going Hollywood (1933) is an American black & white musical film directed by Raoul Walsh, written by Donald Ogden Stewart, & released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The film tells the story of Sylvia (Marion Davies), a French teacher at an all-girl school, who wants to find love. When she hears Bill Williams (Bing Crosby) on the radio, she decides to go visit & thank him. However, difficult problems lay ahead when Lili (Fifi D'Orsay) gets in the way. The film is known by a variety of different named throughout the world. During production, the filmis working title was Paid to Laugh (later Paid to Love). The film is also known as: Af sted til Hollywood in Denmark, Amores en Hollywood in Spain, Auf ins Paradies! in Austria, Cinderella's Fella in Australia, Kärlek efter noter Sweden, Nyhtes sto Hollywood, Greece & Verso hollywood Italy. Cast: Marion Davies - Sylvia Bruce; Bing Crosby - Bill 'Billy' Williams; Fifi D'Orsay - Lili Yvonne; Stuart Erwin - Ernest Pratt Baker, Picture Producer; Ned Sparks - Mr. Bert Conroy, Director; Patsy Kelly - Jill Barker; Bobby Watson - Jack Thompson, the Press Agent; Three Radio Rogues - Group Performing Imitations; Eddie Bartell - One of the Three Radio Rogues (as Three Radio Rogues); Jimmy Hollywood - One of the Three Radio Rogues (as Three Radio Rogues); Henry Taylor - One of the Three Radio Rogues (as Three Radio Rogues). Soundtrack: Going Hollywood - Bing Crosby at the railroad station; Our Big Love Scene - Bing Crosby; Beautiful Girl - Bing Crosby, 1st performed in the movie Stage Mother; Just an Echo in the Valley - Bing Crosby; We'll Make Hay While the Sun Shines - Bing Crosby & Marion Davies & chorus; Cinderella's Fella - Fifi D'Orsay, reprised by Marion Davies; Happy Days Are Here Again; When the Moon Comes Over the Mountain - Jimmy Hollywood; You Call It Madness (But I Call It Love)- Henry Taylor imitating Russ Columbo; Remember Me - Jimmy Hollywood; My Time Is Your Time - Jimmy Hollywood; After Sundown - Bing Crosby; Temptation - Bing Crosby. The film is referenced in Singin' in the Rain (1952). The film is featured in: That's Entertainment!(1974); That's Entertainment, Part II (1976); Hollywoodism: Jews, Movies & the American Dream (1998) (TV); Captured on Film: The True Story of Marion Davies (2001) (TV). A review by TV Guide described the film as: "Fluffy fun, featuring Crosby in his 1st MGM film & Davies in one of her best performances. She's an attractive French teacher who follows aspiring crooner Crosby to Hollywood to save him from the clutches of the egotistical D'Orsay. You can probably guess the rest. Director Walsh handled the production with the brisk pace that was to become his trademark. Crosby, in collegiate sweaters, spectator shoes & white golf pants, is the essence of the casual crooner. He sings one of his biggest early-day hits, "Temptation." The production was lavishly sponsored by Cosmopolitan Productions, the filmmaking arm of newspaper czar William Randolph Hearst, who allowed his leading lady & mistress Davies all the luxuries of an empress during the film's leisurely production schedule. The literate & amusing screenplay was written by Stewart, a witty Hollywood scribe of the Robert Benchley school, & the supporting cast for GOING HOLLYWOOD is solid with Sparks as the cynical film director, Erwin as the bumbling producer, Hayton as the versatile pianist & conductor, & slapstick galore from scene-stealing, wisecracking Kelly in her film debut after several smashing successes on Broadway. The film, when finally released, was an enormous success & transformed Crosby into a top ten box-office attraction." A review by TCM said: "Crosby's voice, however, never falters. He is at his absolute best in numbers like "Beautiful Girl" & the title number, which is set in Grand Central Station. In a memorable Oz meets Oklahoma dream sequence, Davies & Crosby parade through cellophane sunflowers to "We'll Make Hay While the Sun Shines." The finale is also a showstopper, with a deco backdrop that becomes a towering orchestra pit and Davies & Crosby's reunion to "Our Big Love Scene." " Sanderson Beck said: "Some fine songs highlight this story of the temperamental star replaced by the young & hungry girl in both career & romance. The wit of Jill, the frustration of Conroy, the sincerity of Ernest, & the electricians' radio satire tend to outshine the main plot, showing that it's not always the stars that carry the picture. Sometimes the picture carries them." Dennis Schwartz from Ozus' World Movie Reviews had a more humble view: "It never amounts to more than a programmer, but it's entertaining fluff." Edward Lorusso of The Midnight Palace had a similar view: "While Going Hollywood is not usually ranked among the decade’s best musicals, it seems now to be a botched effort by MGM at making a major musical (MGM also reversed directions with Hollywood Party, another ambitious musical that was reduced to nonsense despite a terrific cast) with Marion Davies & Bing Crosby. But at 78 minutes it seems clear that the film was scaled back, especially when there are three sequences that seem truncated. Oddly the three sequences all featured Davies. One wonders why her scenes would have been eliminated, especially since Hearst & others were always watchful of a co-star stealing a film from Davies. Still, Going Hollywood remains an enjoyable romp with great songs delivered by Crosby at the peak of his singing career. And the narrative structure & use of dreams vs. temptation is fascinating.".";

HISTORICAL NOTE: "Arthur Freed (September 9, 1894 – April 12, 1973) was born Arthur Grossman in Charleston, South Carolina. He was a Jewish American lyricist & a Hollywood film producer. Freed began his career as a song-plugger & pianist in Chicago. After meeting Minnie Marx, he sung as part of the act of her sons, the Marx Brothers, on the vaudeville circuit, & also wrote material for the brothers. He soon began to write songs, & was eventually hired by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. For years, he wrote lyrics for numerous films, many set to music by Nacio Herb Brown. In 1939, after working (uncredited) in the role of associate producer on The Wizard of Oz, he was promoted to being the head of his own unit within MGM, & helped elevate the studio to the leading creator of film musicals. His 1st solo credit as producer was the film version of Rodgers & Hart's smash Broadway musical Babes in Arms (also 1939), released only a few months after The Wizard of Oz, & in itself not a very distinguished film because it gutted most of the original stage score. But it did star Mickey Rooney & Judy Garland, & was so successful that it ushered in a long series of "let's put on a show" "backyard" musicals, all starring Rooney & Garland. However, Freed did bring an outstanding amount of talent from the Broadway theaters to the MGM soundstages including Vincente Minnelli, Betty Comden, Adolph Green, Roger Edens, Kay Thompson, Zero Mostel, June Allyson, Nancy Walker, choreographer Charles Walters, orchestrators Conrad Salinger, Johnny Green, Lennie Hayton, & many others. He also helped shape the careers of stars including Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Red Skelton, Lena Horne, Jane Powell, Esther Williams, Kathryn Grayson, Howard Keel, Cyd Charisse, Ann Miller, Vera-Ellen, & many others. He brought Fred Astaire to MGM after Astaire's tenure at RKO & coaxed him out of semi-retirement to star with Garland in Easter Parade. His team of writers, directors, composers & stars produced a steady stream of popular, critically acclaimed musicals until the late 1950s. He allowed his directors & choreographers free rein, something unheard of in those days of committee-produced film musicals, & is credited for furthering the boundaries of film musicals by allowing such moments in films as the fifteen-minute ballet at the end of An American in Paris (1951), after which the film concludes moments later with no further dialogue or singing, & he allowed the musical team of Lerner & Loewe complete control in their writing of Gigi (1958). Two of his films won the Academy Award for Best Picture: An American in Paris & Gigi. On the night that An American in Paris won Best Picture, Freed received an Honorary Oscar, & his version of Show Boat (1951) was also up for two Oscars that year, though it lost both to An American in Paris. But what is now his most highly regarded film, Singin' in the Rain (1952), won no Oscars whatsoever. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1972. Freed left MGM in 1970 after failing for almost a decade to bring his dream project, a biopic of Irving Berlin, Say It With Music, to the screen. He died three years later surrounded by his family.";

Wolfe Gilbert, Nacio wrote the music for the popular children's Television Western, Hopalong Cassidy which 1st aired in 1949. Nacio Herb Brown died in San Francisco, California, aged 68. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970. Brown was married five times, each ending in divorce. His 1st was Ruby Porter with whom he had one child, followed by a marriage to Jeanne Lochart. In the 1930s he was briefly married to actress Anita Page. This marriage was followed by another brief marriage, to Beffie Kellogg. Brown's final marriage was to Georgeann Morris, with whom he had two children.
