The primary item was part of the collection of Henry J. Hauschild Jr., who billed himself as a âPhysiognomist â Bibliopolist â Cognoscente di Eccellentissimoâ, and was the very proud owner of the world famous "Nose Galleryâ at âThe Oldest Houseâ in Victoria, Texas. Henry Senior founded the Hauschild Music Company which was later owned by his 8 children and eventually the four brothers before being closed in 1980; After the Opera House Restaurant failed, the space became the Bible Book Store and later Opera House Antiques; This item was comingled with the leftover inventory of the Music Store and at one time was on consignment at the Bible Book Store;
"Musicologist and historian, Delmer Rogers, longtime member of the staff of the Department of Music at the University of Texas, is of the opinion that the Hauschild Music Company, founded in Victoria, Texas in 1891, was the second oldest institution to commercially publish sheet music in Texas. (Thos. Goggan of Houston being the first.) Also, his extensive research indicates that Hauschild's was the first in Texas to issues music with Spanish titles. About thirty were published, many by talented writers, and sold in large numbers. In addition, probing seems to prove that Hauschilds was the first to publish the efforts of several of the music-loving Germans of the area. Most interesting, too, is that the spritely composition, the Cowboy Rag offered in 1904 possibly was the purcursor of this genre of popular music." taken from "The Cognoscenti Collections";

HISTORICAL NOTE: Since this song was originally copyrighted by Metro-Goldwym-Mayer, I have to assume that it was written as a show tune. But the 1st movie reference I could find was "Two Girls and a Sailor" from 1944.;

HISTORICAL NOTE: "Gus Arnheim (Sept. 4, 1897 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania â Jan. 19, 1955 in Los Angeles, California) was an early popular band leader. He is noted for writing several songs with his 1st hit being "I Cried for You" from 1923. He was most popular in the 1920s & 1930s. He also had a few small acting roles. In 1928-31, Arnheim had an extended engagement at the Cocoanut Grove in Los Angeles. In 1930, when Paul Whiteman finished filming The King of Jazz for Universal, The Rhythm Boys vocal trio, consisting of Bing Crosby, Harry Barris & Al Rinker decided to stay in California & they signed up with Arnheim's band. While the Rhythm Boys only recorded one song with Arnheim, "Them There Eyes", which also happened to be The Rhythm Boys final recording, Arnheim's Orchestra backed Crosby on a number of songs released by Victor Records in 1931. These popular records, coupled with Arnheim's radio broadcasts featuring Crosby's solo vocals, were a key element to the beginning of Crosby's popularity as a crooner. Arnheim grew up in Chicago & at one point was accompanist to vaudevillian Sophie Tucker. In 1919 three men who all would become famous band leaders played together at the Sunset Inn in Santa Monica, California. Arnheim played piano, Abe Lyman played the drums, & Henry Halstead played violin. When Lyman organized a full dance orchestra, Arnheim came along as pianist, leaving to start his own group in 1927. Arnheim's orchestra made at least two film short subjects for Warner Brothers' Vitaphone Corporation in 1928-29. In 1930 and 1931, some notable people worked in or with Arnheim's band:
Fred MacMurray played clarinet & tenor sax in 1930-31 & sang on one recording ("All I Want Is Just One" on 3/30/30).
Russ Columbo played violin in 1930 & sang on "A Peach Of A Pair" (6/18/30).
Future popular bandleader Jimmie Grier was staff arranger during this time. Grier had played lead alto saxophone & clarinet in Arnheim's band from its founding in 1928.
Eddie Cantor & Joan Crawford(!) each recorded a song for Arnheim on July 23, 1931, although the Crawford side ("How Long Will It Last?") was not issued. Cantor's side, "There's Nothing Too Good for My Baby," was issued but without vocalist credit.
Gus Arnheim died from a heart attack in Los Angeles on Jan. 19, 1955.";
HISTORICAL NOTE: "Harry Tobias (Sept. 11, 1895 â Dec. 15, 1994) was an Americanlyricist. Like his younger brother Charles, he is an inductee of the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Born in New York City but raised in Worcester, Massachusetts, he began writing songs in his teens. At the age of 19 he co-wrote his 1st successful songs, "That Girl of Mine" & "Take Me To My Alabam", with Will Dillon. After serving in the US Army, he returned to songwriting, co-writing the 1922 novelty hit "Oo-oo, Ernest (Are You Earnest With Me?)". He often worked with his brothers Charles & Henry, writing songs with Charles for the Broadway show Earl Carroll's Sketch Book in 1929, & writing Rudy Vallee's hit "Miss You" with both brothers the same year. In 1931, he had success with the song "At Your Command", an early success for Bing Crosby, & also co-wrote "Sweet and Lovely", a hit for Russ Columbo. He wrote or co-wrote the theme songs for many films in the 1930s & 1940s, including One Rainy Afternoon (1936), The Young in Heart (1938), Made for Each Other (1939), & It's a Date (1940). His many co-writers included Gene Autry. He died in St Louis, Missouri at the age of 99 in 1994.

HISTORICAL NOTE: "Charles N. Daniels (April 12, 1878 â Jan. 23, 1943), was a composer, occasional lyricist, & music publishing executive. He employed many pseudonyms, including Neil Moret, Jules Lemare, L'Albert, Paul Bertrand, Julian Strauss, & Sidney Carter. His creative work is generally credited as "Moret" while his business dealings & ASCAP membership were under the name Daniels. Daniels was born in Leavenworth, Kansas, & brought up in Saint Joseph & Kansas City, Missouri. At 18 he won a prize for his composition "Margery", which was performed by John Philip Sousa's band. By 1899, Daniels was such a celebrity that when Carl Hoffman published the sheet music for Scott Joplin's "Original Rags," he made a point to credit Daniels as the arranger. It's not known if Daniels actually arranged the piece or merely transcribed it. In 1904 he started the Daniels & Russel publishing firm in Saint Louis, later forming his own firm & working as an executive with Jerome H. Remick & Co. In 1928 he wrote the music for the song "She's Funny That Way", to words that Richard A. Whitingâ normally a composer himselfâ wrote as a gift to his wife. This was recorded by a number of singers, including Margaret Whiting, Richard's daughter. He also composed "Chloe" (1927; words by Gus Kahn), "Moonlight & Roses Bring Mem'ries of You" (1925; words & music Moret & Ben Black, but based upon an organ composition by Edwin H. Lemare), & did both words & music for "Song of the Wanderer" (1926). Under his real name he published "You Tell Me Your Dream, I'll Tell You Mine" with Jay Blackton, A. H. Brown & Seymour Rice in 1908. This was recorded in 1931 by the Mills Brothers. A definitive biography of him has been written by his niece, Nan Bostick.";
