violence and grief upon her feelings as she learned of her mother's
mysterious suicide, the purges affecting childhood companions, the arrest
of her brother's wife when he was a prisoner of the German's during World
War II. It explores the sorrows of her womanhood - her two unhappy
marriages, her loss of both her brothers, and the anguish of her nearly
friendless existence when, after her father's death, former acquaintances
become uncertain whether it was politically safe to know her.
Most touchingly of all, this book
tells of the discovery of real love that came to Svetlana late in life, but
all the more powerfully for that.
