Item Description
1 Item Set or Lot of a railroad fiber insulated joint END POST, INSERT or SPACER (Choose your favorite term, I'm sure there are others). Includes:
ITEM 1.) Manufacturer Unknown; Railroad fiber (or fiberglass) insulted joint End Post (aka Insert or Spacer);
This is typical of the end posts removed from the vicinity of the Victoria, Texas yard when it was lifted before the main track was rebuilt for use by the Kansas City Southern (KCS) Rosenberg Sub Rehabilition/Rebuilding project;
Given the lack of maintenance during the UP (Union Pacific) stewardship of this line, am assuming that it was installed in the SP (Southern Pacific) ownership era;
6-1/2" tall by 5-1/2" wide at base; I do not know what weight of rail this will fit;
Top edge surface is worn and fiberglass layers are visibly separating at the very top; Below the top 1/8" or so structurally sound; some surface staining, scratching and edge chipping;
HISTORICAL NOTE: "The line was originally built as the the New York, Texas & Mexican Railway & was intended to connect New York City with Mexico City. The railway was planned & built by Italian engineer & financier Count Joseph Telfener. Construction began in 1881 by crews working towards each other simultaneously from Rosenberg & Victoria. The approximate 1200 men that built the railroad came from Italy, brought over with passage paid for by Telfener in hopes that they would purchase land along the railroad & populate the area. These Italian laborers are the reason the line was nicknamed the "Macaroni Line". At a cost of $2,036,150, the line between Rosenberg & Victoria was completed in 1882. Telfener operated the line until June 1, 1884 & on July 23, 1884 the construction contract was annulled as only 91 of the intended 350 miles was completed. On January 9, 1885, control was granted to J.W. Mackay, brother-in-law of Telfener, who would sell his holdings to Southern Pacific in Sept. of 1885. The line continued to operate as the New York, Texas & Mexican Railway & on Aug. 5, 1905, the SP merged the NYT&M Ry into the Galveston, Harrisburg & San Antonio Railway Company, an SP subsidiary. The Galveston, Harrisburg & San Antonio Railway was merged into the Texas & New Orleans Railroad on March 1, 1927. In 1948, passenger service was discontinued. The railroad would operated as the T&NO until it was merged into the SP on Nov. 1, 1961. The last regularly scheduled SP train ran over the line in 1985. The railroad fell into disrepair & was abandoned in the 1990's, soon after scrapping of the rails began. Wharton & Jackson counties formed a rural rail district & stopped the scrapping operations, keeping the line from Wharton to Rosenberg mostly intact. In 2006, KCS announced plans to rebuild the Macaroni Line through subsidiary Tex Mex, in order to end the need for trackage rights on Union Pacific. Shortly there after, work began & the 1st revenue trains in over 20 years operated in June of 2009. "; EDITOR'S NOTE: The above is generally correct, but has some problems, for example, I believe that the Border Limited operated until 1953.
