Item Description
This item literally is the definition of ephemera,
which is what makes it extremely rare! This is an original Sambo's
plastic doneness stake or indicator which would be inserted into meat
and served to the customer. This is for "Med" as designated on the
reverse. There were so many of these, and yet they were always thrown
away. Well, here's one, from sometime in the 1970s that's still
survived, although it is cracked (read on for more info on that). It is
in the shape of the Sambo's tiger and measures 2 1/2" in length. As
can be seen, there is some dirt around the "S" and under the "a" on the
front side, and on the very edge of the piece on the left side, there is
a dark spot (this is on the thin edge). As mentioned, this is also
cracked. The crack begins on the "stake" portion near where it connects
to the figural piece and extends through the "m" in Sambos and into the
Tiger's body. The crack measures about 3/4" of an inch. It is a clean
crack and could easily be repaired, or simply left alone, as we have
done.
Again, it's amazing this piece, manufactured to be used only for minutes
and then thrown away, survived nearly 40 years! This will ship in a
box to preserve it's fragile nature.
