This auction listing is for 4 items (to assemble two medals): Knights of Tabor 333 medal and suspension Daughters of Tabor 777 medal and suspension.
UNFORTUNATELY,
These old medals are missing the original blue ribbon with hand stitched or
embroidered lettering "council of twelve". As I understand it, these
are very rare. Each item is stamped or hand cut medal, with hand tooled
designs. The suspension for top has a ribbon guide, as well as attached
pin.
ALL PIECES ARE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. THESE HAVE NOT BEEN CLEANED, OR OTHERWISE ALTERED.
The Knights of Tabor was an organization, similar to the Masons for BLACK AMERICANS. As I understand it, the founder, Moses Dickson, was a mason from Ohio,
and well educated, who traveled in the south, in disguise, during the
Civil War. He informed slaves as to the network of escape methods
available in north, and aided in such. After the war, and into the
early 1900s this organization founded schools and other institutions to
enable freed slaves opportunities available to whites.
There
is information on the web concerning this group, and at least one
reprinted book, written by M. Dickson in 1899, and available on this
history published by:Kessinger Pub Co. in 2003
RE: http://www.buy.com/prod/international-777-order-of-twelve-333-of-knights-and-daughters-of/q/loc/106/33894558.html This work contains the Taborian Constitution and Rules &
Regulations of Subordinate Temples of the several departments of the
International 777 Order of Twelve 333 of Knights & Daughters of
Tabor. Dr. Dickson's intent & object was to form an organization,
composed of men & women, including children, into a united, solid
compact, making it a secret beneficial Order, uniting the members
together by obligation & law, binding them by secret ties, forming
a chain that links them into one body, a unit in movement & action,
for the interest & good of all worthy members. >>

Pride of Ohio Tabernacle, No. 384 The International Order of Twelve Knights and Daughters of Tabor is a fraternal society for African Americans.
Moses
Dickson, a former slave, established the International Order of Twelve
Knights and Daughters of Tabor in Independence, Missouri in 1872. This
group sought to promote "Christianity, education, morality and
temperance and the art of governing, self reliance and true manhood and
womanhood." While the organization eventually had chapters across the
United States of America, it especially flourished in the South. This
group is especially known for its activities in Mississippi, where it
established the Taborian Hospital in Mound Bayou. The hospital opened
in 1942, and its entire staff consisted of African Americans. African
Americans received free medical care at the hospital as long as they
paid a yearly fee to maintain the facility. Initially, the fee was
approximately eight dollars. Twenty years later, the fee was just
thirty dollars per year. Between 1942 and 1964, approximately 135,000
people received treatment at the facility. In 1967, the International
Order of Twelve Knights and Daughters of Tabor ceased operation of the
facility. While not as prominent as it once was, the International
Order of Twelve Knights and Daughters of Tabor continues to exist today.
The
International Order of Twelve Knights and Daughters of Tabor eventually
had a presence in Ohio. In 1888, some African Americans in Ironton,
Ohio formed a chapter, the second such group in Ohio. They called their
group "Pride of Ohio Tabernacle, No. 384."
IF
you are a collector of Early Americana, grab this opportunity to add
these to your collection. I have NO REASON TO BELIEVE these are
anything but authentic. I have NOT seen other originals, or copies, if
any exist. I do understand there are displays of originals medals in
some Museum out west? There was also a medal for Mothers of Tabor, and possibly Sons of Tabor.
Opening bid on this lot is $75.
