RARE! 19th Century Mandalay Period Ox Cart Ornament

Crocodile Design

This is an exquisite piece that demonstrates the appreciation of art that flourished throughout the Mandalay Kingdom during the Mandalay Period (1752-1885). During that period even common folk used artistic ornament like this on everyday objects like ox and buffalo carts. The ornament, which was believed to have magical and protective powers, would be fixed on the cart between the ox or buffalo (please reference the black & white photo above that I took during my travels) . This is not a reproduction, it is an authentic ox cart ornament that was used. According to Nat Worship and Buddhist beliefs, crocodiles are revered for the strength, allusiveness and longevity.

Dimensions: Approx 18 inches X 18 inches X 5 inches (can be seen in the photos above.)

Materials: Teak Wood (Stand: Wood & Iron)

Age: 19th Century
