Tibetan prayer flags are called Lung Ta. When translated, Lung Ta means Wind Horse. Prayer flags are constructed of rectangular, colored, cloth panels that are stitched to a cord or string. The flags are hung in a diagonal fashion, from high to low. They can be attached to fence posts, between trees, to a roof’s edge or any place where they can be moved by the wind. Be sure to anchor the cord ends securely.
When we visually see the movement of the flags we are reminded that they are carrying to all places, via the wind (horse), the blessings of goodwill and compassion.
Be aware that the elements will eventually have an effect on the cloth fabric and the flags will need either to be taken down or replaced. The flags, battered about by wind and rain, eventually become tattered looking, and, if hung in a sunny spot, possibly faded. When this starts to happen it is time to take the flags down and replace them as a form of respect to their higher purpose.
The fabric construction means that the flags won't last forever. Depending on the location and the specific weather conditions, this could translate into replacing the flags, more or less, every month or so. If you look at the time of replacement as an opportunity rather than a chore or an expense, you can use the actual replacing of the flags to renew a spiritual purpose that you define. Further, you could time the hanging of the prayer flags with another event, like a moon phase, and then there could be a cyclical emphasis as well.
About the Symbols on the Prayer Flag
These panels are stamped with the Wind Horse symbol, mantras and other images. The black stamping can vary in color tone from darker to lighter and sometimes can also be applied so that it is a little crooked or a little blurry, but this doesn't really matter as a factor in the functional purpose of the flags.
WIND HORSE: In the center of the flag panel is a picture of the Wind Horse (also referred to as “Taâ€) that has three mani jewels on its back. “The Ta is a symbol of speed and the transformation of bad fortune to good fortune." Symbolically, the Wind Horse represents unimpeded positive energy.
MANI JEWELS: "The three flaming jewels symbolize the Buddha, The Dharma (Buddhist teachings), and the Sangha (Buddhist community), the three cornerstones of Tibetan philosophical tradition.â€

IMAGES: Positioned in each corner of the flag panel are animal/bird images: Dragon (water), Garuda (fire), Tiger (air / wind), and Snow Lion (earth).
