Item Description
Practical Home Veterinarian, 1906 first edition hardcover book by Dr. David Roberts. Wonderful old 184 page book filled with brief but very specific descriptions of typical farm animal ailments and medicines needed to treat them. Cattle and horses receive the most attention here, but there are also detailed sections on diseases of pigs, sheep and poultry. There are some wonderful old photos plus other illustrations. Finally there is a long list of Dr. Roberts' drugs and tonics that can be ordered either directly or from dealers. Clearly this is a glorified advertisement for the author's veterinary medicine business. But it is also a remarkably readable book providing fascinating insight into both the similarities and differences in animal care in the last century. It includes a terrific poem designed to help people identify a horse's age from the condition of its teeth. Interior is in near mint condition except for faint yellowing of pages from age, reseller's penciled price mark on front endpaper, and vet supply dealer's bookplate pasted on inside front cover. The green cloth cover has light corner and spine end wear and a few small spots but is in otherwise good condition. Page edges are bright red so this book makes a colorful presentation.
