Peruvian Textile Burial Dolls Family of 4

You are viewing three ‘old’ Peruvian Burial Dolls. I say ‘old’ because that is what was whispered by the Peruvian woman who sold them to us.

We purchased the dolls in the late 1990’s from an older woman and her daughter who were selling handcrafted textiles and Peruvian souvenirs. The dolls were in a box covered with a piece of fabric, hidden under her table and behind other boxes. At first she seemed reluctant to show us, but then brought them out and sheepishly told us they had been buried and were very old.

From a bit of research, I’ve learned that they are Peruvian Burial Dolls, most probably reproductions, and most probably crafted from ancient textiles. According to an article written by Camille Myers, A Social History of Peruvian Grave Robbing: “These dolls are being manufactured today using ancient techniques and genuine Chancay textiles… The law, I am told, does not consider a textile ancient once it has been incorporated into a modern craft object, allowing for their legal exportation.”

• The female doll is approx. 27.5” long x 7.5” wide (head width)

• The male doll is approx. 26” long x 7.25” wide

• The baby doll is approx. 24.5” long x 7.5” wide

The dolls are handcrafted of woven fabric, yarn, string, and wood. They are stuffed with tree bark and are a bit dirty, like they had really been buried in the ground.

These dolls are very unusual and would make a wonderful addition to any doll or textile collection!
