Item Description
This auction is for a rare and highly decorative work of art entitled "Tarpon Springs, Florida" by American Regionalist Joseph P. Di Gemma, (Born. Jan. 6, 1910, died Manhattan, NY Feb. 22, 2005).
A mixed method (lithograph w/hand coloring, etc.), print. The image measures 15.5 x 20 inches and is printed on a sheet of heavy wove paper measuring 18 x 22.5 inches. It is signed with pen in the image by the artist. Although the artwork was presented as a gift to friends of the artist and it is inscribed in pencil along the lower right margin; "To Alme and Lee fondly - from Ellinor and Joe - Sept 14, 1980," but it was actually executed sometime in the early 1950s to mid 1960s.
Joseph DiGemma was a resident of New York and Rockport, Massachusettes, and was also a WPA artist during the great depression. An example of his artwork of that period (circa 1930), was reproduced as the cover illustration of the publication of "Nebraska - A Guide To The Cornhusker State" (Viking Press, NY -1939). He also served in the Coast Guard during WWII. His assigned service duty was as a combat artist. Ref: [Congressional Record Volume 141, Number 106 (Tuesday, June 27, 1995)] [Extensions of Remarks] [Page E1339-E1340]From the Congressional Record Online through the Government Printing Office]. He is also author of a book entitled "Lumiprinting - A New Graphic Art" (Watson-Guptill Publications - 1942).
As best I can tell, Mr. Di Gemma did a great deal of illustration work for book and magazine companies from the 1930s through the late 1960s. His work is quite diversified, but above all, retains the wonderful Regionalist qualities of those who apparently inspired him - Thomas Hart Benton, Grant Wood and John Steuart Curry.
Florida Regionalist art is very rare and hard to come by through any means. Buell Whitehead is an artist who comes to mind immediately when I look at this piece, and I have wondered for some time if the artists had ever met. I knew Buell Whitehead personally and visited his studio in East Fort Myers several times. Before he passed away he showed me the various methods he used in creating and producing prints. He told me that he was inspired by Thomas Hart Benton and also loved the impressionists (and he did a number of paintings after them - in his own style). After reading Joseph Di Gemma's book, "Lumiprinting" I can state that he and Buell Whitehead certainly had a great deal in common even if they never met each other.
CONDITION: A superb, clear impression, printed in colors and enhanced by hand. Aside from a few very minor spots of foxing there are no other flaws in the image. The border around the image was painted with thinned white paint. Verso, heavily toned and foxed from highly acidic backing. Staple holes in all corners well away from image. Otherwise an extra fine piece of rare Florida Regionalism.
