The primary item was part of the collection of Henry J. Hauschild Jr., who billed himself as a âPhysiognomist â Bibliopolist â Cognoscente di Eccellentissimoâ, and was the very proud owner of the world famous "Nose Galleryâ at âThe Oldest Houseâ in Victoria, Texas. Henry Senior founded the Hauschild Music Company which was later owned by his 8 children and eventually the four brothers before being closed in 1980; After the Opera House Restaurant failed, the space became the Bible Book Store and later Opera House Antiques; This item was part of the leftover inventory of the Music Store and at one time was on consignment at the Bible Book Store;
"Musicologist and historian, Delmer Rogers, longtime member of the staff of the Department of Music at the University of Texas, is of the opinion that the Hauschild Music Company, founded in Victoria, Texas in 1891, was the second oldest institution to commercially publish sheet music in Texas. (Thos. Goggan of Houston being the first.) Also, his extensive research indicates that Hauschild's was the first in Texas to issues music with Spanish titles. About thirty were published, many by talented writers, and sold in large numbers. In addition, probing seems to prove that Hauschilds was the first to publish the efforts of several of the music-loving Germans of the area. Most interesting, too, is that the spritely composition, the Cowboy Rag offered in 1904 possibly was the purcursor of this genre of popular music." taken from "The Cognoscenti Collections";

HISTORICAL NOTE: ""Once Upon a Time" is a song with music by Charles Strouse & lyrics by Lee Adams from the 1962 musical All American. In the musical, the song was performed by Ray Bolger & Eileen Herlie, & their version appears on the Broadway Cast recording. It has been sung by Bobby Darin, Frank Sinatra, Perry Como & Tony Bennett among others.";
HISTORICAL NOTE: "All American is a musical with a book by Mel Brooks, lyrics by Lee Adams, & music by Charles Strouse. Based on the Robert Lewis Taylor novel Professor Fodorski, it is set on the campus of the fictional Southern Baptist Institute of Technology where the worlds of science & sports collide when the principles of engineering are applied to football strategies & football strategies are used to teach the principles of engineering. Hungarian immigrant Fodorski's techniques prove to be successful, resulting in a winning team, & he finds himself the target of a Madison Avenue ad man who wants to exploit his new-found fame. Adams & Strouse, flush with the success of Bye Bye Birdie, & Brooks, still a relatively unknown television comedy writer, concocted an old-fashioned musical reminiscent of such lighthearted fare as Good News, albeit one with a gay subtext enhanced by director Joshua Logan, who filled the stage with his trademark beefcake scenes filled with flexing muscular men stripped to the waist. The show was beset with problems from the start. Brooks never completed the 2nd act, leaving the task to Logan, a noted script doctor whose comedic sensibilities didn't jibe with those of Brooks, & the difference in writing styles was obvious. Additionally, Logan's emerging bipolar disorder was beginning to affect his work. Once Ray Bolger agreed to play Fodorski, the script was tailored to showcase his talents, but turning the musical into a star vehicle for a performer who no longer was the audience favorite he once was ultimately proved to be a mistake. The Broadway production, choreographed by Danny Daniels, opened on March 19, 1962 at the Winter Garden Theatre, where it ran for 80 performances. In addition to Bolger, the cast included Ron Husmann, Anita Gillette, Fritz Weaver, & Eileen Herlie. Tony Award nominations went to Bolger for Best Actor in a Musical & Logan for Best Direction of a Musical. An original cast album was released by Columbia Masterworks Records. In 2006, Harbinger Records released a CD entitled All American Live Backers Audition, a recording of a session for potential financial investors featuring Adams & Strouse performing their score, including songs cut prior to opening night, with Adams providing a running commentary between the numbers.":

HISTORICAL NOTE: "Charles Strouse (born June 7, 1928) is an American composer & lyricist. Strouse was born & raised in New York City, the son of Ira & Ethel (Newman) Strouse. A graduate of the Eastman School of Music, Strouse studied under David Diamond, Aaron Copland & Nadia Boulanger. Strouse's 1st Broadway musical was the 1960 hit Bye Bye Birdie, with lyrics by Lee Adams, who would become his long time collaborator. Strouse won his 1st Tony Award for best score for this musical, which is considered the precursor of the rock musical. Strouse's next show, All American, with a book by Mel Brooks & lyrics by Adams, came in 1962 & produced the standard âOnce Upon a Timeâ (recorded by Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett & Bobby Darin, among others). Following this was Golden Boy (1964, also with Adams), starring Sammy Davis, Jr. & It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's Superman (1966, based on the popular comic strip) which introduced the song "You've Got Possibilities" sung by Linda Lavin. In 1970, Applause (starring Lauren Bacall, with book by Betty Comden & Adolph Green, and lyrics by Adams) won Strouse his 2nd Tony Award. In 1977, Strouse adapted another comic strip for the stage, creating the hit Annie, which garnered him his 3rd Tony Award & two Grammy Awards. Other Strouse musicals include Charlie & Algernon (1979), Dance a Little Closer (1983, with lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner), Rags (1986) & Nick & Nora (1993). Strouse also wrote a number of musical revues, many with Adams. Strouse's film scores include the classics Bonnie & Clyde (1967), There Was a Crooked Man... (1970, with Henry Fonda & Kirk Douglas), The Night They Raided Minsky's (1968, with Adams) & the popular animated movie All Dogs Go to Heaven (1989). He & Adams also wrote the theme song âThose Were the Daysâ for the television show All in the Family. Strouse's songs have been heard on the radio throughout his career & have run the gamut from girl-band pop to hip hop. In 1958, his song âBorn Too Lateâ was number one on the Billboard charts, & in 1999 the quadruple platinum âHard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)â by artist Jay-Z was the winner of a Grammy for Best Rap Album of the year & the Billboard R&B Album of the Year. Strouse's writing also extends into orchestral works, chamber music, piano concertos & opera. His Concerto America, composed in 2002 to commemorate 9/11 and the spirit of New York City, premiered at The Boston Pops in 2004, & his opera Nightingale (1982), starring Sarah Brightman, had a successful run in London, followed by many subsequent productions. In 1977, Strouse founded the ASCAP Musical Theatre Workshop in New York, through which many young composers & lyricists have found a forum for their work. Upcoming works by Strouse include an adaptation of the Paddy Chayevsky film Marty starring John C. Reilly, a musical version of The Night They Raided Minsky's, & an adaptation of Theodore Dreiser's An American Tragedy. Real Men, for which Strouse wrote the music & lyrics, premiered in January 2005 at the Coconut Grove Playhouse in Miami, Florida, & his musical Studio, premiered at Theatre Building Chicago in August 2006. The musical Minsky's, with music by Strouse, book by Bob Martin, & lyrics by Susan Birkenhead (loosely based on the movie The Night They Raided Minsky's) premiered in January 2009 at the Ahmanson Theater. Strouse has won Emmy Awards for music in television adaptions of Bye Bye Birdie & Annie. He is also the recipient of the ASCAP Foundation Richard Rodgers Award & the Oscar Hammerstein Award. He is also a member of the Theater Hall of Fame & the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Strouse is married to director-choreographer Barbara Siman. They have 4 children: Benjamin, Nicholas, Victoria & William.";
