If you are looking for a gift for someone or yourself that
loves nature, gardens and gardening or original art that is unique and whimsical
then you have come to the right place. These extremely innovative creations will
bring joy and whimsy to your garden, home and office setting.
We are honored to offer these Washington National
Cathedral ornamental stone carvings that have been adapted into smaller formats.
The goal was to reduce the scale of these incredible carvings, making them
available for purchase, through the cathedral gift shop and catalog. Every step
of this strict creative process is overseen by cathedral administrators, to
ensure attention to detail and quality craftsmanship. The result is an exact
reproduction of an extraordinary piece of cathedral art. The reduced size makes
them highly desirable to collectors and anyone who appreciates the beautiful ornamentation's that is the Washington National
Cathedral.
The Washington National Cathedral Chimera is hand cast in
stone, and individually hand-finished with a patina wash to accentuate the
detail. It is weatherproof and waterproof and may be used indoors as well as
outdoors. It measures 4.5" W x 5.5" H x 6.5" L, weighs 7.5 lbs., ships at 11
lbs. and comes individually gift boxed in environmentally friendly packaging and
materials.
This miniature is a reproduction
of one of the 112 gargoyles found at the Washington National Cathedral. Inspired
by people, animals or imaginary beasts - from the whimsical to the grotesque -
each of the gargoyles is a unique example of the stone carver's art. With roots
in Greek mythology, the word "chimera" signifies an imaginary monster whose body
is a combination of mismatched animal parts; an apt name for this charming
creature. Conceived and carved by John Guarente, the gargoyle is located at the
triforium level of the Cathedral's north facade, near the
west towers.
