Album notes
Personnel includes: Michelle Shocked (vocals, guitar). ANTHOLOGY is a solid overview of folk-rock singer-songwriter Michelle Shocked's first decade's worth of albums, featuring the hits "Anchorage" and "On the Greener Side." Funny the difference a couple of decades makes. When Graham Parker released the scathing "Mercury Poisoning," about his unhappy tenure at Mercury Records in the late '70s, his new label wouldn't dare to put their name and logo on the single. After folk-pop singer Michelle Shocked left Mercury in the mid-'90s, the title of the label's own best-of compilation deliberately recalled that infamous single. MERCURY POISE is a solid overview of Shocked's years at Mercury, distilling three albums, SHORT SHARP SHOCKED, CAPTAIN SWING and ARKANSAS TRAVELER, into 12 entertaining tracks. 1988's SHORT SHARP SHOCKED, the best of the three, provides the most satisfying songs, including the Carole King-like minor hit "Anchorage" and the R&B-tinged "If Love Was a Train." The '40s jazz elements of CAPTAIN SWING and minstrel tunes from the controversial ARKANSAS TRAVELER sound better than they do on those uneven albums.
