My Story

Just the other day, I was looking for my eyelash curler in my mom's bathroom. I was suprised to find two new tubes of Maybelline Volum' Express mascara, because my mom rarely purchases new makeup unless I'm with her. I asked her about it and she was so psyched about the deal she got: 2 tubes of mascara (1 regular formula, 1 waterproof) for just $6! I know what you're thinking, you could buy 2 tubes of mascara for less than $6 if you bought, let's say, Wet'n'Wild brand makeup, but Maybelline Volum' Express mascara is worth more than $6 for just 1 tube, in my opinion. Anyways, being the nice lady she is, my mom said I could have one of the tubes, so I chose the waterproof formula. I've had some awful experiences with waterproof mascara in the past, but Maybelline created some kind of miracle here!

What Makes This Mascara Better Than The Rest?

For starters, when you first remove the wand from the tube, you'll notice that it doesn't hold too much access mascara that, normally, you would have to wipe off on the tube opening. You'll also see that the bristle-thingies (I can't think of what they're really called) are full and not rigid-looking, as so many are. After you apply the first coat, you'll already love Maybelline Volum' Express mascara for making your lashes fuller yet still soft. Normally, it's wise to wait until the first coat dries before you apply the second coat, but I'm incredibly impatient, so I just kept on swiping the stuff on. If I did this with any other mascara, it would be Clump City, but Volum' Express just kept on going on as smoothly as the first coat. This is the best part: I didn't even have to use my eyelash separater - even after THREE coats!

Is It Really Waterproof?

Honey, you can take a shower or a swim and this stuff ain't gonna budge! This shouldn't be done on a regular basis, but I have fallen asleep without taking off my makeup from time to time, and when I wake up all of my makeup has rubbed off on my pillow, except for my mascara, which kept my lashes full and curled throughout the entire night!

How Do You Take It Off?

I first used my eye makeup remover to take this mascara off, but it didn't work much at all (cheap brand..?). I then used Johnson & Johnson Baby Oil Gel With Aloe and the mascara slipped right off my lashes. I highly recommend the baby oil gel, as it doesn't irritate the eyes, and actually conditions the lashes.

Full Review: Maybelline Volum' Express Curved Mascara
I absolutely love most of the Volum'Express mascaras, with the exception of the turbo version which didn't add as much volume for some reason as the others. I had first started with the straight brush, regular version and really, really liked it, so I decided to spring for this one in my local Sav-On Drugstore. The packaging of this one is identical to the others, except for the color of the tube, but I feel that the performance of this version of the Volum'Express is even better than the others which are great too!

First of all, I have very fine lashes that are very long , but always in need of thickening. So, being on constant great, thickening mascara patrol, I tried this on a whim. Like the straight version, the brush of this curved one is very dense in terms of how the bristles are situated, to me, that makes for better and more even application of the mascara. The curve hugs my lashes and follows the shape of my curled lashes that I create with my trusty Shu Uemura lash curler. The application is very steady and even and the result is lovely, naturally thick and glamorous looking lashes. Volum'Express is not too bad at building length as well, though it was not intended as a lengthener, but is touted as a body and volumizer for lashes.

I believe that the curved brush comes in a soap and water washable formula, I think the waterproof formula only comes in the straight brush. What I love about this too, is that there is hardly any smudging or clumping. I say that because, sometimes when you first open thickening mascaras, they tend to have excess mascara at the base of the wand, and I noticed that this was no exception. I tissued off the unusable and never again did I see the excess product on the wand; maybe it just settles in the packaging. I usually prefer black-brown colors and this one comes in very black, soft black, and black-brown, sometimes navy or other colors during Christmastime.

I also like that this is waterproof in the sense that it doesn't run or flake off in water, though the curved version is not supposed to be waterproof per se, as I stated earlier, but it is soap and water washable, a great feature to be sure! As for removing it, I noticed that the stuff just swept right off and there was no black residue under my eyes. My eyes tend to be somewhat sensitive and have gotten irritated with other mascaras, but not this one, and it is also safe for contact lens wearers.

Another thing I look for in mascaras is how they wear throughout the day. I have never been one to reapply mascara during the day, but with this one you surely don't have to. This formula also holds up well during long nights, looking as fresh and full as the moment you applied it, even hours afterwards. In terms of performance, there really is no appreciable difference between the straight brush and this one, but I feel that this one delivers more ease of use, as it is curved beautifully to fit my lash line. Maybelline has better mascaras in my opinion, than Cover Girl and this was surely won't disappoint. I have used many high-end brands such as Estee Lauder, Chanel, Lancome, and others, and this one is even better than most of the more expensive ones.

It has also been my observation that Maybelline mascaras tend to be on the drier side, meaning that they often dry out after a few months which makes it hard to get the remaining product out of the tube. However, last time I checked, I think that the shelf life of mascaras is about three months, at which time you should think about replacing them anyway..... The price of this is so minimal anyway, you do get your money's worth, as the performance and wearablility of the mascara compensates for any wasted mascara that you may not get to use within three months, depending on how many coats you normally wear or how dramatic you want the look. I consider this product my little, fat tube of awesome!
