The Log Cabin is always a favorite traditional pattern. The design is almost "ancient", appearing in early Greek and Roman floor tile patterns. It has appeared in early English quilts as well. American quilt makers popularized the log cabin pattern when the fabric selections were minimal and very expensive. Due to this shortage, the innovative early American quilters constructed the pattern in pieces out of leftover fabric that was used in their clothing. This made all of their quilts have a "scrappy" look. The "log cabin" name was probably attached to the pattern because assembly of the blocks resembled the process of building a real log cabin. There are many layouts of the Log Cabin quilt. This log cabin quilt is in the "Barn Raising" layout, symbolizing the construction of the log cabin barns. The center square of each block is a shade of red which symbolizes the fire in the hearth of the cabin.
