ORIGIN OF USE - In short, legend has it: A red envelope filled with money was given to a person as reward for saving a village that was living under a constant fear. It was then a most auspicious occasion since the village was lifted out of this negative state. Thus, it is considered a "blessing" to receive a gift with a red envelope.
GIFT GIVING- Birthdays, Weddings, Anniversaries, the New Year, or Any Special Occasion - These envelopes are great to hold gift cards, cash/checks, and personal messages/written requests. They bring a colorful appearance to these particular type of gift items, and, if placed inside a card, the red envelope can add a festive touch to celebrate that special occasion. Other uses could be: $ from the tooth fairy, to commemorate a birth, to gift a piece of jewelry, movie/concert/sporting event tickets and more.
FENG SHUI - Envelopes are used to enhance luck, prosperity and happiness. As a color, red has a very high visibility and so it is associated with energy, strength and power. It is the color of blood, our lifeforce, our vitality.
Color has been scientifically shown to evoke certain emotions and to establish specific environments so it should come as no surprise that colors and color associations can set the tone and reinforce a message or intention. As a stimulant, Red is the most common color associated with love, passion, desire. It is an emotionally intense color that has been said can enhance human metabolism, increase respiration rate, and raise blood pressure.
Author and crystal therapist, Michael Gienger, writes about the color red in his book Crystal Power, Crystal Healing. While his description is in reference to minerals, his comments on the color red can be applied to any subject, any situation. Gienger states:
"Red minerals have a strongly stimulating effect, produce heat and speed up things. They stimulate the circulation, the blood vessels and the blood itself. ... In a similar manner, our psychological experiences also become more intense. Our inner world of images is fortified and feelings are expressed more clearly; in particular the elementary emotions such as love or hate are enhanced. ... They strengthen the willpower and the ability to persevere. Red stimulates the inner fire. It encourages all processes of learning, and the processing of experiences in the mind, and, in this way, accelerates our spiritual growth. Red encourages willingness to help others as a basic prerequisite for living together with all other beings."
