The primary item was part of the collection of Henry J. Hauschild Jr., who billed himself as a âPhysiognomist â Bibliopolist â Cognoscente di Eccellentissimoâ, and was the very proud owner of the world famous "Nose Galleryâ at âThe Oldest Houseâ in Victoria, Texas. Henry Senior founded the Hauschild Music Company which was later owned by his 8 children and eventually the four brothers before being closed in 1980; After the Opera House Restaurant failed, the space became the Bible Book Store and later Opera House Antiques; This item was part of the leftover inventory of the Music Store and at one time was on consignment at the Bible Book Store;
"Musicologist and historian, Delmer Rogers, longtime member of the staff of the Department of Music at the University of Texas, is of the opinion that the Hauschild Music Company, founded in Victoria, Texas in 1891, was the second oldest institution to commercially publish sheet music in Texas. (Thos. Goggan of Houston being the first.) Also, his extensive research indicates that Hauschild's was the first in Texas to issues music with Spanish titles. About thirty were published, many by talented writers, and sold in large numbers. In addition, probing seems to prove that Hauschilds was the first to publish the efforts of several of the music-loving Germans of the area. Most interesting, too, is that the spritely composition, the Cowboy Rag offered in 1904 possibly was the purcursor of this genre of popular music." taken from "The Cognoscenti Collections";

HISTORICAL NOTE: "Founded in Cork by John Loesberg in the late 1980s, Ossian was at one time one of Irelandâs most prolific publishing & recording companies with its own retail outlet in the form of The Living Tradition shop. Around 2002 the shop was sold & in early 2005 it was announced that Novello had taken over the handling of Ossianâs publishing catalogue while The Jigs & Reels Company would be running the label. However, later in the year it was made known that Ossianâs catalogue of recordings had been acquired by Cló-Iar Chonnachta. The Connemara companyâs site lists those CDs which are currently available. Sadly, The Living Tradition closed in 2008.";
HISTORICAL NOTE: "Ossian USA: Since that brilliant October day in 1993 when an 18-wheeler drove up their dead-end dirt road in rural New Hampshire with over 70 boxes of Traditional Irish Music books, CDâs, cassettes & videos from OSSIAN Publications in Cork, Mary Lou Philbin & Charlie Clarke have been immersed in educating themselves about the MUSIC & how to get it to the People who need it in their lives. How did OSSIAN USA happen? Mary Lou had been a professional singer for over 20 years. In 1971 she performed at the River Valley Hotel in New Ross, County Wexford as a resident musician. The other performer-in-residence was John Loesberg. Mary Lou returned to the States at the end of that year & lost track of John. A few years later, John founded OSSIAN PUBLICATIONS with his wife, Therese, & settled in Cork. While in Ireland that year Mary Lou was exposed to Traditional Music & began a pursuit of that interest. It continued back in the USA when she attended a Ballads Class at the Augusta Heritage Summer School Irish Week & heard about singers such as Joe Heaney, Len Graham, Paddy Tunney, Robert Cinnamond & many more from the great Dublin singer & song-collector Frank Harte. Unfortunately, there seemed no easy way to get recordings of these singers without getting them from Ireland. Charlie came on the scene &, being a native of Cork, was already âinto the MUSICâ. They went to Ireland for their honeymoon in 1993 & while in Ennis, picked up a book called Folksongs & Ballads Popular In Ireland vol. 1. There were 2 songs in the book listed as anonymous. Mary Lou knew who the authors were & thought that the publisher should give these authors proper credit. When they got to Cork, where the book was published, they went to OSSIAN Publications & were introduced to the owner; that same John Loesberg who had performed at the same Hotel in New Ross over 22 year before. The rest seemed inevitable. John showed Charlie & Mary Lou around & all the singersâs recordings that Mary Lou had been learning about were available through Johnâs business. She remembers commenting âYou canât get these recordings & books in the US!â To which John, of course, replied, âFolks could if you sold them there!â Seven years later we find that Charlie has joined the business full-time (he had a REAL job until January 2000) & they are enjoying their chosen servitude. They enjoy hosting a concert series in the venue which used to house hay & shingles, now known as OSSIANâs LOFT & greeting customers face-to-face who come to the in-house Music Store. (And yes, that 18-wheeler finally made it back down Beck Road).";
